He has helped me at the county fair, our 4-H banquet and he even checks on my dog when I am out of town for the weekend. I am thankful to have his help when it comes to these situations! According to Scales, Benson, Leffert, and Blyth (2000), self-esteem may be related to the act of helping others. This would explain what Codey believes to be his best asset: the ability to intellectually voice his opinion with reason when in a discussion. Codey is also passionate about helping others in his community through community service. Codey said to me, “Helping others is helping yourself.” Just in the last few months Codey has organized a fundraiser to benefit the Louisiana Red Cross for those affected by the recent floods. Codey’s 4-H club has also helped a local organization called “Newborns in Need.” Codey and his fellow 4-H members will help collect items for new mothers in need of baby care items they are not be able to …show more content…
I have never met anyone so dedicated to improving their leadership and citizenship skills. These skills come naturally to Codey. Codey attended a three-day public speaking academy over the summer to help improve these skills. Codey also recently went on to the State 4-H Public Speaking Contest earlier this month. Perhaps the most impressive leadership opportunity Codey is currently involved in is his active participation in the Christian County University of Missouri Extension Council. As a youth representative on the County Extension Council, Codey acts as a voice for all of the youth of Christian County. If Codey becomes aware of a need in the community that Extension Specialists could provide programming for he brings it to the attention of the Council. Just this week Codey has organized for the Christian County Community Development Specialist to talk to his agriculture class about “making the most of personality and communication.” With Codey’s assertiveness, I do not doubt his sincerity and honesty of the interview. He shared a lot of personal information about his life that he did not have to. When Codey began telling me intimate details about his pained relationship with his mother, I made sure he knew that he did not have to share details with me. The second day I interviewed Codey he told me that he actually felt better by talking about his past. I was relieved to hear this
