Special education is a field that is comprised of numerous disabilities such as, intellectual, emotional, physical to abilities that allow students to be considered gifted and talented. During my special education teacher observations I came to learn that you are helping many students with different struggles and abilities on the road of academic accomplishment. The 1997 amendment to IDEA first introduced the requirement to look at communication needs for those with hearing impairments when making the educational placement. Students with hearing impairment are who I prefer to work with because I have gained a lot background knowledge due to my little brother being Deaf. Another reason I would like to work with those with hearing impairments is because I am fluent in American Sign Language. It is beneficial to know that individuals with hearing impairments will face issues such as speech delay, communication difficulties, social problems and encounter educational challenges. Educational challenges individuals with hearing impairments have is missing instruction during the teachers lectures and issues with reading and writing assignments due to their lack of well-developed language compared to peers. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet was born in 1787 and still to this day is considered a prominent figure in deaf education. Gallaudet went to Europe to learn methods of teaching the deaf and how to incorporate individuals into the community after meeting a nine year old deaf girl. Diversity teaches us as humans to be open to things that separates us from one another and allows us to have a better understanding and acceptance of people as they are. After reading through the chapters of our book I have discovered about myself that I have a strong belief in that everyone is different in their own unique way and that we should cherish every moment together with acceptance. Bringing this belief into my classroom will create an environment of acceptance and that no two students have the same needs so you need to be able to change to help each student accordingly. If you want to move forward in special education as a profession you must embody certain traits as a human such as adaptability, patience, organization, and being highly intuitive with the students due to some students not being able to express their emotions properly. After deep considerations I have decided that I want to continue my education as a speech pathologists and work with students with disabilities in the school district. I believe this is a better fit for me and I truly think I found my passion in life and to achieve this goal I will need to continue my education and get a masters in speech pathology then join employment in the school district to be able to work with student with disabilities.
