It is estimated that about 1% of America’s population join the military and to serve their country and at the tender age of 20 I joined that percentage. Having graduated from high school 2 years prior, I had the opportunity to work a plethora of jobs. We made ends meet but barely and often I went without some of the things I wanted as a teenager. I was determined that as an adult I would not live as I had as a child. The atmosphere I grew up in wasn’t a desirable one. People worked dead end jobs, had little to no healthcare, and I never knew of anyone that traveled or went on vacations. As a result, I confided in a friend that had enlisted in the Air Force and she told me about all the benefits, incentives, and possibility to travel. I took that information and did my own research to find an Air Force recruiter. This recruiter confirmed her information and also explained that I would have to …show more content…
This was my first international flight and it took 16 hours. I landed at Incheon International Airport in Seoul, from there I had a 2 hour bus ride to Osan Air Base where I checked in my dorm room and got settled without incident. In the days after my arrival I met coworkers and got processed into my new unit. I didn’t feel like I was in South Korea until the first timed I went outside the base. It felt like a complete culture shock. I couldn’t read street signs and the language being spoken I couldn’t understand. The food was prepared different and even had a different selection of things to eat. I soon fell in love with South Korea and the things I experienced throughout my stay. I worked on new aircraft and I found myself learning new hobbies. I departed Osan in December of 2012 and made a new home in Homestead, FL where I have been since leaving South

I already missed Seoul, in South Korea where I had spent more than 20 years of my life. Surrounded by mountains, there was a big river winds its way through Seoul. The night view along the river with plentiful skyscrapers was so beautiful. Now I have a dim recollections of the past. It is my sixteenth year in Atlanta and if someone asks me where I prefer to live in, either Seoul or Atlanta, I say emphatically Atlanta is the city where I want to live in.…

“A young man who does not have what it takes to perform military service is not likely to have what it takes to make a living. Today's military rejects include tomorrow's hard-core unemployed,” John F. Kennedy once said. Only thirty six percent of students that come out of high school choose a career they are interested in. Thirty percent of students enlist into the military straight out of high school. These numbers have dropped since the mandatory draft in 1973.…

Once there I went towards the Marines (Later I did realize this wasn’t the branch I would’ve rather joined), and there I started, I took the practice ASVAB, I talked to them about what I wanted to get out of joining and why. As towards the end of the interview, they did ask for something I couldn’t provide, proof of residency. I thought that the Immigration card (DACA card) would work, but since the least you need to be when joining the military is a permanent resident, the Card didn’t cover that. The distraught that was on me when I realized some of the many things I couldn’t do due to my history, something I’ve wanted since a child. It was life learning of the many things in the near…

When I entered high school I got a job to help my parents pay the bills and send money to my family in Ethiopia. My parents were working 40 plus hours a week to support an immediate family of 7 and over 30 relatives in Ethiopia. Me getting a job was a tremendous relief for them. I was dedicated to working about 30 hours a week and this took both an emotional and physical toll on me. I woke up at 7am each day to go too school followed by a two hour soccer practice, then a seven hour shift at Caribou Coffee, followed by hours of homework and studying.…
