Emotions including desolation, grief and loneliness were experienced on Memorial Day, 2015. Grief spread throughout my house after the news that my Gramma passed away had reached it. My Mother, Father, two sisters, Dick, who was my Gramma’s partner for 18 years, and many family members all had to cope with this feeling of sadness. When my Mom got the horrible news, I was the first to know. I don’t know if you will believe me, but the only reason I was awake was because of a bad gut feeling.…

Twenty-two years ago on January 4th, 1994, Taryn Staley was up at Finny Cumberlane to celebrate Gary’s, Taryn’s brother, fifteenth birthday. It was her mom, her step dad, her friend (Amy), Gary, her mom’s friend, four or five of Gary’s friends, and herself who traveled up the Finny Cumberlane mountain side. Their day was spent playing in the snow and snowboarding on the small, snow-capped mountain, but the day took a turn for the worse on their way home. “At 10:00 AM everyone met at our house in Burlington with their snowboarding gear, extra clothes, etc. We also loaded up a camp stove, pans, cups, cocoa and a pot of chile with freetos dip chips for lunch.…

Everyone knows pain. The world is cruel and does not discriminate when it comes to loss. It doesn’t matter if you’re rich, poor, black, white, straight or gay. Everyone experiences loss in their life, whether it’s a loved one, a job opportunity or even your house. Loss is illustrated differently in the novels “The Things They Carried”, a compendium of the Vietnam experiences from the point of view of a platoon, by Tim O’Brien and “The Catcher in the Rye”, a coming of age novel, by J.D Salinger.…

I live my life on a legacy of war survivors. My family's standards toward success have always been a key factor as I was being raised. As a young musician, my grandfather’s optimistic views deteriorated the moment he got drafted for World War II.Appointed as commander in the tanks divison, my grandfather felt his everlasting ego grow as he protected his country. The moment of victory however soon vanished when an oncoming tank shot down my grandfather’s tank, destroying everything in sight. He was able to escape from the commander’s hatch, but as he struggled to get his best-friend out of the tank, the tank exploded.…

I have experienced many stressful situations recently my organization, however none have compared to stress I experiences leading up to my deployment to Iraq. When I joined the Oregon National Guard, I was told to never go to the 41st Infantry Brigade Combat Team (41 IBCT), made up of two Infantry Battalions, a Calvary Battalion, a Field Artillery Battalion, Support Battalion and the Headquarters. I was also told that I should especially never want to work in 2nd Battalion of the 162nd Infantry (2-162 IN BN), which was the strongest of the two Infantry elements in the brigade. After working in the state Joint Force Headquarters for eight years, because no other person in my career field would take the position, I was asked to take one for the team, and join 2-162 IN BN, as their Senior Human Resources Noncommissioned Officer. Two years leading up to the deployment I was continually tested, and these experience have ultimately made me a stronger leader.…
