It was service that saved my life and it will be service through which I wish to help bring change in the communities that most need it. As an aspired leader and a future lawyer, coming together with the people who share the same goals as me in Prague is a dream come true. Sometimes I feel as though while I am extremely ambitious, I do not know how to structurally and

This statement is ironic, as it contrasts Baba’s lifestyle in Kabul, compared to America. Amir asserts that “Baba, had built the most beautiful house in [...] a new and affluent neighborhood in [...] Kabul” (4). However, Amir later thinks that the “homes” in America, make Baba’s “beautiful house” seem like a “servant’s hut” (135). These contrasted statements clearly show the differences in lifestyle and social statuses between the two countries that Baba lives in. During his life in Afghanistan, Baba is an influential man with a house and respected job, but unexpectedly ends up having a low social status in America for being an immigrant.…

In “Long in Dark, Afghan Women Say to Read is Finally to See,” Carlotta Gall describes how the Afghan women feel about the new literacy program and what it means to them to be able to read. The women have not been allowed to go to school under the government of the Taliban, but the new government has started literacy classes in homes taught by school teachers after school is out. The women want to learn to read to read signs, to check currency values, to read letters from family members, and to find good jobs. Last summer, I met a man named Robert Stephens. He is running to be a Durham City council member to make a change in his community. This is his passion, one which was instilled in him by his father, whose life motto was that if you see something wrong, you’re obligated to try and fix it. His father is dead; he succumbed to a heart attack after saving his neighbor’s children from a house fire. Mr. Stephens told us this story to show how his father was committed to his belief and to show how he was committed to his own.…

Standing under the familiar radiant heat, the gentle glow on my skin reminded me of the many summers I spent being complacent in Washington. However, surrounding me were kids from numerous families who knew nothing about complacency. They were always moving, always multitasking, and always working; I wondered how migrant farm worker families coped with such a restless lifestyle compared to mine. For the past four summers, I traveled with the St. Anthony Parish youth group on mission trips. Most recently, I spent the last two summers in Bellingham serving the migrant farm worker communities through the Agape Mission program.…

Ever since I was young, I've had the desire to leave world knowing I made a lasting positive impact; as Northmont’s ambassador to the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Seminar, I could meet others who experienced the same inner drive as a child and managed to turn their ambitions into reality. I don't want to live life idly, noticing problems and complaining about them, but never making any steps to resolve the issues. Such a life seems wasteful, when every human is born with the potential to change the world. Instead, I intend to make use of every ounce of time given to me, changing the world instead of watching it. With the help of HOBY, I can receive the tools and encouragement I need to push me along on my journey, both achieving my dreams…

I think one of the reasons why this opportunity is so important to me is because I have always had this drive to help people. My dad came to America from Mexico when he was in his early twenties. He left his parents and his 13 siblings in hopes to get a good paying job in America so he could send them money. Often times in the media and politics, there is a criminalization of immigrants and their intentions. All my dad wanted to do is provide for his family and make their lives easier.…

Every two to four years since birth, I have relocated to a new home in a new city, state, or country. The routine is always the same: the movers pack, the house is scrubbed spotless, and goodbyes are exchanged. Excitement sweeps over my family as the reality of a new adventure sets in. Although fond memories with acquired friends are difficult to leave, my dad’s service in the Army has taught me that every good thing has a price and when duty calls I must answer, like he does and those before him. This is my responsibility to America: to place my country’s needs before my own.…
