Personal Experience: Adapting To American Culture

Improved Essays
Hi Tram,
I can definitely understand and relate to how difficult it was for you to adapt to the American culture. Personally, I faced the same struggles in learning how to adapt to the American culture myself when I was just three years old. Forming friendships was challenging due to a language barrier. Therefore, I was not able to make friends until the second grade. Due to a lack of English proficiency, I experienced a challenging time learning in school and communicating with my teachers. It wasn’t until my family helped me realize something important in life—that is, life is not easy and that your struggles will only make you a stronger person every day—a necessary component to overcome the trials and tribulations of life. It is in that

I agree with you on the fact that there is a contrast between mother and the father's point of view regarding adapting to a new culture. Reading through the text, it is quite evident that the father, Ralph, openly rejects the idea of adapting to the American culture. However, in the case of the mother, she is willing to adapt to the American culture by thinking the American way and joining the country club. But, I believe that the reason for this contrast you mentioned is due to the fact that both of them have had different experiences while blending with the American society. I believe, the father must have had an experience that must have negatively impacted his point of view towards the American culture.…

Unlike many teenagers I didn’t, have a transition period from childhood to teenage years to adulthood, like so many others here in America might have. My life went from a carefree child to being a mature and responsible adult within a matter of months, and here is how it all started. The fact or the matter is that I was born in a refugee camp in Nepal and life wasn’t easy with death and disease looming everywhere. I roamed the streets as carefree as young kid could. Life was normal as I went to school every day, my dad worked countless hours, and my mother stayed home like so many other women in the community.…

I was born in the capital of Ethiopia, Addis Ababa, the place where all my best memories live. My mother gave birth to her first child at the age of 18 then to me a year later, she hadn’t finished high school so she trusted my grandparents to raise us in the city while she went to work in another. There was never a dull moment in our grandparents home, we would play countless games in the water when it rained and the yard would get flooded or get chased around by our guard dog as my family would watch laughing despite my fear of dogs. One of the things I will always be grateful for is growing up in Ethiopia, my days were filled with happiness and adventure that I will forever cherish. Moving to America was a drastic change for my brother and I, we would spend countless nights crying homesick, asking to go back home.…

Though it may be the simplest question in the world for others, being asked where I’m from is an inquiry I’ve always found hard to answer. At least if I was asked where I was born, I could say Kathmandu, Nepal. Having grown up as an American citizen in Asia, I have never been able to answer the dreaded “where are you from?” Though many people equate a life overseas to wealth, my parents moved to Asia under idealistic obligation, not business opportunity. We lived on the stipend of a volunteer, not the salary of a contract employee.…

When you hear the word Culture most people reference a social atmosphere, certain food, a sport, or a religion that’s tied to a specific place. Whatever interpretation you have of culture the reality is, Culture is defined as: “a set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization” (3). Being culturally aware of other countries gives you a better understanding of where your own country stands overall. Whether you value patriotism, economic growth, or being a world leader, there is something to gain from cross examining other nations. We are able to see more successful routes of doing things, and we are able to share knowledge and technological advances for the good of man-kind.…

Traveling to America can be difficult, sometimes even dangerous, but many immigrants say the real odyssey is adjusting to the culture shock that comes upon arrival. While adjusting may seem difficult, with the use of these two First, try to put yourself out there; Whether it be stating your opinion, joining a sports team, or even introducing yourself to someone new, every step towards making a oppurtunity gets you one step closer to making a new house a home.
