Personal Narrative: My Year At Muskingum High School

Improved Essays
The year is 1989. I just got out of Psychology class and I’m sitting on the grass in the quad surrounded by brick, school buildings. The bright blue sky is in deep contrast with the white clouds that the sun is currently hiding behind. This is my sophomore year at Muskingum University. I begin to think about my boyfriend, Kyle. I’m 5’1, my head comes to his chest. He has unruly, brown hair that reminds me of a chocolate bar when the sunlight hits it.

I stand up, wipe my jeans off, then walk on the cement path leading to my dorm. There aren’t too many people outside right now. I open the tall, metal door and walk up the stairs to the floor I live on. It’s almost eerily quiet in the hall. I can hear my footsteps clunk on the tiles. I reach my dorm room. The door is decorated in pictures of my roommate, other students, and I. I grab the doorknob, allowing myself in, and walk to my bed. When I first arrived the size of the room surprised me. Now that all our furniture is in here, it’s become even more of a snug fit in here. I put my bag down and take a short nap on my bed. I wake up to my roommate, Emily walking through the door. I glance at the clock on the wall, it’s 4:30 in the afternoon now.

“I’m having dinner with Kyle. What about you?” I reply. “Going out with a few girls in one of my classes to a movie and possibly dinner afterwards.” “That sounds fun. When are you leaving?” I’m trying to make conversation. She looks over at the clock then answers, “Right now actually. Have a good time at dinner. See you later!” she calls out the

The semester before my freshman year I applied to an early college high school; I knew that I was going to have more work than if I had went to the traditional high school, but I knew I could do it. At first I was doing well, but as time went on the work became more challenging and frequent eventually my grades fell and took my pride with it. I wanted to transfer to the traditional high school in my neighborhood, but changed my mind after a talk with one of my professors. She helped me to recognize that if I quit not only would I be throwing away the work that I did do, but I’d also be preventing myself from seeing what work I could do. I took that seed of information and turned it into a tree of motivation.…

High school changes people. They express themselves, become opinionated, and they start to look at the world differently as they experience things they have never encountered before. A wise Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Man’s mind stretched to a new idea never goes back to its original dimensions.” This quote is an excellent way to describe my experience in high school.…

Even though everyone who goes to Shakopee High School knows about this situation, they do not know how much it has significantly affected my life. My life changed last year in so many ways. In some ways this has given me more opportunities, but in most cases this event has negatively changed everything around me. Worst of all it has made me lose many friends, given me a bad reputation, and has made everyone think that I am someone that I am not. People I had never met did not like me, discriminated against me in some situations; but on the other hand, it has showed me who my real friends are because they continued to persevere by my side and stuck with me through all of the tough times.…

For the past year, I could only provide an indefinite answer to a frequently asked question, How was your freshman year? In fact, those of us who experienced our freshman year could be addressed as “college veterans” will never initiate a conversation with regard to the past year. Perhaps they consider that the freshman year was not as consummate as they initially planned. I cannot judge my first year in college was successful or frustrating, but I feel I benefited from the meritorious experiences and practical knowledge gained from my college life. In my opinion, no matter what goals one wishes to achieve in college, whether its grade, love, health, or sense of accomplishment, one has to be prepared for both failures and…
