Growing up in a Mexican American household, most likely one is to be raised Catholic. Therefore, as a young boy it became ordinary to follow and believe in what my parents instilled in me. Furthermore, I never had the courage to explore any other religion and get a sense of what other religions are about. However, now that I am taking Social Work 461 with Dr. Tillman, one of my assignments is to attend a religious service that is held by a group that is different from mine. As a result, I decided to attend a Buddhist temple to get an insight of what the Buddhist religion is about.…

I decided to attend a Jehovah witness Kingdom Hall located at 3001 S 84th St, Philadelphia PA 19153. I attended the ceremony February 26th at the 10:00 am service. I chose this venue because I have always had a negative stereotype that I associated with Jehovah witnesses. The negative stereotype was that they would just knock on everyone’s door in the neighborhood. Understanding there Is more to this religion I felt it was important for me to attend this service to help rid my ignorance and provide me with insight into a religion I knew nothing about.…

Being part of such a small community while heightening my sense of being has also made me more appreciative and understanding of other cultures & groups. For me understanding others has become a key component in understanding myself. On September 9th I attended a Phi Slam event called Kaleidoscopic Color-Dressed Chromatic Dance Fest. This was a social dance event that is completely dry and it is essentially a giant dance party. The guys in Phi Slam, which is a Christian organization that is similar to a fraternity but they do not do typical frat things such as drinking, hazing or smoking, set up the event. Phi Slam has events just like fraternities and sororities do. This event was just one of the many events they put on throughout the year.…

Last Sunday, I attend my friend’s Francine church service generally speaking going to church is something that has been installed in me, throughout my upbringing being that, I am a Baptist Christian, but I decided to take a cultural plunge and experience another domination of Christianity. Francine’s Church is called The Evening of the Light and is considered a Protestant church. Prior to attending the service, I was shocked when Francine instructed me to wear a long skirt or dress that went pass my knees and not to wear any make- up. This was so odd to me because at my church there were no dress codes and the members typically wore formal attire on the first Sunday of the month because we took communion and there definitely wasn’t any restriction…

Working with the Jewish religion has helped me gain insight into their past and their present. My culture compared to them are very different, our holidays differ greatly. For example, we celebrate Christmas as the day where our Christ was born, Jews don’t celebrate this day. In their culture, they celebrate Hanukkah a seven grace period where each day represents a different purpose. Yet it’s not hard to see that both our cultures are not so different, we praise and celebrate what we believe in and that is one common…

The meaning of Messianic Judaism is explained by Rabbi David Chernoff as “a movement of Jewish people who believe that Yeshua (Jesus Hebrew) is the promised savior (Chernoff 1).” The messianic movement welcomes the gentile or Christians and Jews alike to join together for worship. The rituals of the Messianic Congregation are the same as Judaism, including the observing of the traditions and holidays of the Jewish people with one main difference in belief. The difference being, in Rabbinic Judaism Jesus is not considered to be the “anointed one” and Rabbis are to be still looking for the Messiah. The Messianic movement has been around for over two thousand years.…

Within the major groupings of Judaism there have created variations with respect to religious belief and practice, ritual, lifestyles, and degree of acculturation. In the Jewish religion the main rites of passage are circumcision, bar mitzvah, marriage and the funeral service.…
