I'm honored that you have chosen to do your history report on your ancestory. I'm not sure how much your mother has told you about our family history; so I'll start in the beggining. I was born on March 12, 1741 to Matilda and Hurai Muthui; they were good people and tried to provide for me and my six brothers; Guri, Moses, Thia, Martin, Danju and Muingo.I helped out as much a I could but we were very poor. When I was 19; I arrived by ship in Geogetown in the spring of 1760 with 150 other would be slaves. After docking; we were seperated by gender and our health status (healthy or unhealthy). I guess I should be thankful that I was selected to go with the group to South Carolina's largest and wealthiest City; Charlestown. My brothers Guri, …show more content…
Life on the plantation was grueling and many days; I wasn't sure if I would make it to the sunset. Many times I had wished not to. The first few weeks many of the slaves died. We had to clear acres of swamp land without the use of machines. The trees were cut down and we had to use our bare hands to dig the roots of the trees up. A John Deere backho would have been much appreciated then. Alligators took off Guri's right arm and he died a few days later from infection. We didn't have hospitals or readily available healthcare like you have now. Disease, heat strokes, injuries and attacks from alligators killed our numbers off fast but the demand for slaves continued to grow. For every one our initial group lost; two would replace …show more content…
I can't say we had much in common other than being slaves and working on the rice fields. We didn't get time to talk and learn each other. You guys have those dating sites now and compatability quizzes. Whatever happened to being friends and letting nature take it course? I reckon I've gone off course again. We lived in a house no bigger than your bedroom and we all had to make do with what we had. I only had one pair of shoes. We each had three sets of clothing was given to us by Master Richter's wife Margaret. She was a woman with a warm heart. She used to sneak us a litte extra food on the holidays and after the births of my children. No daycares back then so I had to strap my children on my back and take them put to gather the crops. I'm not bitter for the hardships we had to face. Back in the day; rice was just as profitable as gold. The success of South Carolina's rice was due to the forced labor and ridicioulus demands put upon us slaves. We worked tirelessly and in deadly conditions to make profits. We were so valuable because they needed and ultmately depended on us for thier success. They needed our knowledge, skills, and strength to make the Rice Plantations come to life and continue to be profitable. We were able to adapt to the moist Carolina climate and landscape because it mirrored some of the areas in

Coleton Clifft History Since 1876 Sarah Wilkerson Reconstruction Reconstruction after the Civil War was definitely not the prettiest fix! The indications of significant differences in the lives of colored people were the different rules passed towards them and some of the freedoms they were given. The indications that little had changed were the way the colored people were still treated and how they still constantly struggled. Slavery was an insanely tough process for any slave. In the novel, “Civil War Veteran of Portsmouth, Virginia” the man Albert Jones, being the ninety-six year old man he is, told his story of himself when he was a slave.…

Slavery was one of the darkest clouds in American history! It makes me cringe every time I think about what African-Americans had to go through during that time. Not only were the slaves themselves dehumanized but the owners themselves did not act normal because of all the power they had. Slavery is something America will never be able to wash their hands of, but it gave us some of the bravest Americans you 'll ever meet in Frederick Douglas, Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman.…

Forty plus years ago, I began this journey into the past. The impetus for this book came from a series of the questions asked at the very first family reunion. In June 1974, St. Louis, Missouri was the site of the first Jackson-Riley reunion. Attendees of the reunion introduced and greeted each other and then the questions about relationships began. How are we related?…

Slavery is something that effected hundreds of thousands of people. Rather if you were a abolitionist at the time slavery was going on ( a white person who was free but gave slaves help and freedom) or a slave it made a huge impact on your life. But slaves definatly had it far worse. Slaves had to go through things such as getting separated from your family, including mothers loosing children and sisters and brothers being split apart. This usually always happens and it is very rare that you will see your loved one again.…

Due to the geographic differences between the Northern and Southern colonies, the development of their economies was based off of different goods and services. In the South, with its “temperate climate and long growing season” (Davidson, et al 88), colonists found that the soil was fertile and therefore suitable for the large scale growth of first, tobacco, but later other crops including indigo, rice, and cotton. Southern colonist could grow these crops essentially all year as the temperature in the region remained the same. Unfortunately, the geography of the region did not allow for “good harbors and navigable rivers” (Davidson, et al 74), ensuring that the Southern colonies would remain mostly agricultural. In contrast, the Northern colonies…
