Personal Experience: A Clinical Analysis

Improved Essays
Today it felt extremely strange not coming into the clinic until 12pm. Once at work, I helped with filling meds while everyone was taking their lunch breaks. It was a pretty slow day and everything was pretty much caught up, so I went to our pharmacy and started helping take inventory and cleaning the shelves off. This was extremely helpful for me because it was helping me know where each drug was and Mary was quizzing me and asking me what each drug does while we were moving them around. After the cleaning was done I completed a few urinalysis and fecal tests. I even got to try my hand at a jugular venipuncture on a very fat puppy and was unsuccessful. I need a lot more work on the obese dogs and have a lot of trouble finding the vein.

The last four weeks of clinical has been great. I had the chance to followed nurses around and see their day-to-day routine. I had four patients in one day and I was able to do head to toe assessment, obtaining vitals signs, help with bathe, and passing medications. One of the patients I had taken care of was a 50-year-old lady with end stage kidney failure. Her condition was not discovered until she came into the hospital.…

Throughout the entire semester, I incorporated evidence based practice into my clinical days. Whether if I was performing a skill or if I was observing my nurse do a skill, I was thinking is this evidence based. I observed nurses use water instead of alcohol to clean an area on the skin before pricking a patient’s finger for a blood glucose check; this I knew was evidenced based. Some none evidence based thing that I observed were using 5/8inch needles when the nurse should have been using a 1inch length or not using two hands when assessing a patient’s fundus. I met my midterm goal of telling the nurse nicely that this is not what we learned in school.…

My day started a bit off, I had an emergency that morning that made me run a bit late for clinical. This made me miss some important information such as, how nurses in NCBH hand over to the next shift, but aside that, I had a wonderful day working with nurse Mrs. Osei. She welcomes me by introducing herself, which I responded likewise. She took me with her to do her morning rounds and administer medication to her assigned patient. After we were done with her morning medication, I went to one of her patient whom I was assign to by Mrs. Natasha to perform mini mental survey and general assessment on the patients.…

It was a late night in Spring when I went to visit my pregnant sister. A few moments after being at her house, she mentioned she was not feeling well. As a concerned aunt to be, my immediate response was that we needed to see a doctor. Considering it was 10 PM there was no way we could have gotten to her OB/GYN, therefore we decided to go to the nearest emergency room. We waited and we waited, filled with anxiety, fear and many mixed emotions.…
