In my own experience, when I came here in September 26, 1990, from the Dominican Republic, with my family. I used to live in front of a project called Hope Garden, where a lot of low class people live. I used to see them smoking marijuana in front of kids and spending all day in front of the building door because a lot of them were on public assistance. As we know, Bushwick, Brooklyn had a very bad reputation and where used to live a lot of people were involved in gangs and selling a lot of drugs in corners of the neighborhood. Bushwick used

I live in an area that is a cross between the ghetto and suburbia. In my neighborhood, I can literally see the difference a block makes. The race division, the housing projects that grace Beach Channel drive, the much more elaborate homes a block away in Shore Front Parkway, and the rich versus the poor. We often perceive the rich as well refined, privileged with better education and somehow well mannered.…

Then there’s the whole other race factor: Is concern over “income levels” and “demographic change” just gloss for an underlying assumption—that neighborhoods go south when white people move out and black people move in. If that isn’t enough to roil the revitalization waters, this emerging shift in neighborhood policy rings all kinds of alarm bells about gentrification and social engineering. Baltimore has avoided such prickly issues for the last decade with a community development approach under former Mayor Kurt Schmoke that favored the most decayed sectors in the city. Now, as Mayor Martin O’Malley’s administration begins formulating a new approach that gives greater consideration to neighborhoods that haven’t yet deteriorated those tricky issues threaten to surface. That has raised fears in some quarters of a polemical battle.…

The area is a barrio but can still be defined as a ghetto since a ghetto refers to a run-down area with concentrated poverty and joblessness as well as higher crime rates and drug problems. The Latino and Caribbean community still define the neighborhood with the prevalence of their distinctive music, foods, goods and languages. Clothing stores and supermarkets therefore continue to market themselves towards that community. The neighborhood experienced an influx of new inhabitants due to the rising costs in nearby Williamsburg. Part of Bushwick was even segmented off and has been referred to as East Williamsburg to make it more marketable.…

The turbulent history of Hispaniola and the constant change of control on the island are two of the main reasons for this bad relationship between the countries. From 1822 to 1844 Haiti had complete control of the entire island. Trujillo used this twenty year period as a point of reference to blame Dominican problems on the Haitians. He often said that before the Haitian control of the Dominican Republic, the Dominicans were blond hair and blue eyed.…
