The aggressive support for English-Only laws in the United States, is largely based on encouraging assimilation, economically, politically, and ultimately - morally. It stands diametrically opposed to bilingualism, threatening that very way of life, and is often viewed in the Latina/o community as xenophobic and nativist. I never got into learning Spanish, and well they couldn’t blame me, I only started speaking English when I was six. Before that I was using basic sign language which I have now forgotten.…

The great opportunity that I have with my subject is that I get to teach them about the Latino culture and 98% of my students are Latinos. I feel this is a great opportunity to teach my students to feel proud of their Latino culture and the great advantages they have by being bicultural. For those students who are not Latino, I teach them to appreciate other cultures and to feel conformable around their peers. Besides, I always ask them to share something about their culture and compare it to the Latino culture. Many times they come to discover that both cultures share a lot in common.…

Band of Brothers How do you spend your time outside of work and school? I am willing to bet some of that free time is spent with other people you would consider friends and family. Possibly unknown to you, most of these activities you enjoy can be classified as sub-territories, specifically tribal territories, according to Desmond Morris’s writing “Territorial Behavior”. Some examples you may be familiar with are book clubs, political parties, biker gangs, gun clubs, fraternities or sororities, and so on. Desmond Morris’s research and expertise in animal and human behavior confirm the fact that almost all of us partake in these sub-groups and feel a sense of allegiance with which ever group we are a part of.…
