A Personal Example of Truly Effective Leadership
When Nam Phan attended a private high school in Vietnam, students attending the school was sometimes forced to follow quite unusual rules set by the school. One day, the school passed a rule that prohibited students from posting any negative comments on the school on social media, such as, Facebook, Twitter, and so on. The rationale behind this rule was that the school wanted to maintain positive reputation of themselves in community by eliminating the negative comments about the school on social media. First, Norah took actions for the school to suspend the rule prohibiting students to share their honest opinions online in case these comments were negative. Second, she persuaded schools to suspend all the penalties they gave to the students due to undesirable comments for the school on their social media pages. These changes were taken place since her strong value toward freedom of speech drove her to protect students to express their perspectives and feelings online without any intervention from school.

Intentional Influence Norah’s intentional influence was to articulate the reason why the new rule should be abolished due to two parties. First, Norah demonstrated students and other members why this change was important to the school and students. She was focused on the academic progress and human rights when she explain this. Second, she searched for staffs, faculties, and parents of students who shared the same opinions with her on this issue, and she asked them to help her and other students to take campaign. In fact, she asked faculties to bring this topic to the board meetings or faculties

This is because Norah united a bunch of individuals, and they were willing to become her followers. To achieve this, she built in-net circle and expansive network. In-net circle network was composed of three qualities. First, mutual trusts between her followers and her were established. Her willing followers trusted her due to her daily conducts. More specifically, her classmates and faculty members knew she was a diligent student. Second, a common value purpose was established. The students who have been forced to obey the discipline shared a common purpose with her. In addition to these students, faculties, staffs, parents were gradually inclined to share the common value purpose with her. This is because her value of “protecting the freedom of speech at school” was something they also cared about. Finally, social support was offered to her from followers. Many students signed up their name on the form against the rule. Faculty members and staffs talked to the board of the school to explain the necessity of changing the
