Reflective Essay: How Softball Changed My Life

“There are two primary choices in life: to accept conditions as they exist, or accept the responsibility for changing them ,” (Dr. Denis Waitley). In order to change the way one wants to be, they must accept the responsibility it takes to be different than they were before. It takes time and effort in order to change their ways or just theirself as a person. I had to make changes in order to move forward in my life. Softball gave me escapement. Escapement from what was going on in my life. Playing softball was also a way that I would relieve stress. I played softball for eight years before giving it up. I loved the sport was as if I loved it as a family member. As my skills improved each year, I gained more enjoyment from playing the sport. The thrill of making plays, getting on base, and batting drawn me into the sport even more. As my 8th grade school year was about to end at Clark Middle School, I knew I needed to change how I was when it came to school. I decided to apply to a boarding school, Mt. Edgecumbe. I played for Nunaka Valley as a Junior softball player. I was fairly good at most of the positions, but this year I mainly catched and played outfield. There were occasions where I’d play infield. We had about three coaches and one of them was the East High School softball team coach. One day, he was telling me if I went to East that I’d have a spot on his team because I was “pretty good.” I had to break the news to him that I wanted to play, but I might be going to a boarding school.
