Personal Essay: Why I Want To Career In Psychology

My personal struggles and my family history has allowed me to develop curiosity and encourage me to major in psychology. For me psychology has opened so many branches that I could connect personally. I enjoy learning new things and challenging myself and I believe psychology gives me the knowledge, ability and self-confidence necessary to empower and reach higher education. Psychology has helped me understand myself and how others learn, process information, and react to certain situations. Also coming from a domestic abuse family and father who is a heavy drinker has really impacted my life in so many ways growing up and witnessing such traumatic events and observing how my siblings reacted has always haunted me. It allowed me to explore the culture, biological, social and cognitive reasons in why issues like this happen. That is why I’m eager to know more about the subject and be able to help my community and change the legacy of my family and of future generations. While conducting this class project I had the opportunity to visit East Los Angeles Women 's Center where I got to see and hear remarkable stories of amazing women who been through a lot and are able to tell their stories. That’s when my enthusiastic and my passion to learn more about psychology motivated me to overcome barriers and develop analytical skills to not just help out my family but to help others not experience and witness what I have seen. When I was in the third grade I was label as the girl who “needed extra help” because according to the specialist I had an auditory processing disorder. That is why I believe that one of my greatest achievements is that I have not given up in my educational goals and that I am still continuing my education. Besides that at the same time I was also seeing a speech therapist who would help me pronounce and hear the differences in letters by doing vocal exercises. Throughout my life, I recall hating going to school for many reasons throughout middle school and high school the administrators and people in power always try to control my academics by deciding what classes I should take. Instead of motivating me they would discourage me and make me feel that I was not capable of succeeding. However, I prove them wrong I was able to take the courses and succeed in them. That motivate me to strive for higher. Being able to pass a class and receive honors for me is a triumph because almost all my life I have been part of a special education program called Resource Specialist Program (RSP). Growing up I was teased and bullied because I was considered “special ed” and because I had trouble speaking. For me, every day was and continues to be a struggle that I have to overcome by making sure I really understand a material and to make sure I say a word correctly. I have improved a lot over the
