Looking back on my life, there are several accomplishments of which I am quite proud. I I have completed The United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC) Bootcamp. During my senior year of high school, I participated in an Office of Naval Research sponsored competition called SeaPerch. SeaPerch pits teams of students against each other to create a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and complete a series of underwater challenges. Every day for the majority of my senior year, I would go from school to work and then home, where I spent every moment of my free time working on my team’s ROV. Countless hours were spent devising new ideas, testing them, and watching them sink uselessly to the bottom of my testing tank. On competition day, however, our team excelled, scoring third out of over 50 teams.…

I want to become a Naval Officer because of the people I have met. The American Legion Post 360 is the sponsor for the local Boy Scout troop and working with those members is what made me want to become a Naval Officer. The members of the Legion were wonderful to work with, and when I worked with them they did not focus on themselves. They focused on what they could do to help the project. This attitude is one I would like to have and becoming an officer paves that way as its goal is to create people who focus on completing the project.…

My father and I had grown apart, but slowly were reconnecting over the years of disconnect and resentment. I was investing all my time into JROTC, slowly advancing in my cadet career into a snapshot of my future military career. I was approached my sophomore year by a Marine recruiter who convinced me to be a part of “The Few, The Proud, The Marines!” My mind had swiftly changed from Army to the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in a matter of a day. Besides who didn’t want to be a jarhead and earn the coveted Eagle, Globe, and Anchor.…

Through this program, I have learned that I am stronger, smarter, and more motivated than I could have ever imagined. Commanding parades and completing a week-long Parris Island boot camp and receiving the NS1 Distinguished Cadet ribbon has changed me. I came into the program as an unruly, out of shape, unrefined teenager. I am almost done with my sophomore year and I am no longer those things. I am smart and I am strong and I am powerful.…

I never really considered going to the Naval Academy until I was contacted by the volleyball coaches this spring. Initially, I dismissed the email, but then my father told me about the academic excellence and character development of the Academy, and I decided to look further into it. In April, I had the privilege to visit the Yard and witness the character of the Brigade and experience the dedication of each Midshipman to becoming the best version of him or herself in athletics, academics, character, and leadership. Regardless of who was nearby, they all displayed remarkable integrity by constantly to striving for perfection in every action. After seeing the fervent spirit of the Brigade, I knew that I wanted to be a part of the community and that it would be the best institution to help me become the best version of myself.…

The U.S Coast Guard is one of the fifth branches of the United States Military, and most people haven't a clue what they do. A couple of years ago, if someone would have asked me ‘what is the Coast Guard and what do they do’, I too would have no idea what to answer. Over the past few years, there is a family that I have grown very close with and the Coast Guard has played a huge part in their lives. The father was in the Coast Guard for 29 years and retired as a captain. Over those 29 years, the family moved about every 3 years all over the country.…

People in the civilian world often people don’t think that the military life can transfer over into the civilian life very easily, but honestly it can help in a lot of different ways. Something as simple as being the leader of your group or your office in the civilian world can be traced back to your military training. Promotions also can be a beneficial thing from bettering yourself as a Marine or as a serviceman in general. I personally know a SSgt that when he ended his active duty service, he went to his new job and simply made a board for keeping accountability of his workers at all times during the working day, and that with other accomplishments, led to his promotion to be the boss of his former boss. Honestly military training and seeking responsibility to better yourself can pay off in a lot of…

My vision started to fail on mile four of the six-mile hike. Small white specks flickered across my field of vision. The next thing to go was my hearing, followed by my ability to walk in a straight line. My platoon sergeant saw the signs of heat stroke and forced me to stop. I should have stopped myself, but all I could think was: you will finish this, or you will die trying.…

My interest in the Naval Academy and the fleet began as just another college option. I have not had any family member serve in the Navy and was rather indifferent to military service, other than my admiration for the men and women who serve. As I continued to explore my options, the Naval Academy remained on the backburner until I visited for the summer STEM program two years ago. As soon as I first walked on post, I instantly knew I loved it--the beautiful old architecture, the shimmering blue water, and the white-clad Midshipmen marching crisply down Stribbling. This past summer, when I visited again for NASS, I decided the Naval Academy was the one for me.…

As a Marine, the civilian world sees us as an immaculate figure to the United States. In a way giving us the respect and honor we so proudly earn. Inside the Marine Corps we learn to honor these values and morals we received since boot camp. It molds us to become disciplined and show this figure to others. If we loose focus as a Marine we sadly decline that and become to be a lesser than normal civilian.…
