Personal Essay: The Alchemist

Brazilian author Paulo Coelho said in his book, The Alchemist,“Listen to your heart. It knows all things, because it came from the Soul of the World, and it will one day return there”. Growing up, I always wanted to become an Oncologist because I wanted to cure patients from Cancer. My mind was set to cure, and cure only. I recall my very first interaction with Dr. Danielle Doberman, a Palliative Medicine physician, during my second month as an intern in the ICU, where I indulged in saving lives in an acute setting. I recall the 19- year- old boy who was brought in after he was found down intoxicated; unfortunately, he was brain dead and it was difficult to break the news to his family. I am thrilled to expand my knowledge and gain more experience in the field by pursuing a fellowship training in Hospice and Palliative Medicine. My ultimate goal is to return to my home country and implement what I learn into the Saudi health system. Giving the current lack of Palliative Care providers there, I seek to expand not only my clinical experience, but also the leadership experience I will need to become a pioneer in the field. I listened to my heart and I have no doubt in my career goals.

Growing up in a family of mixed origin, moving to the States and having dealt with patients from different cultural backgrounds, has helped me to make a smooth transition into my current position. I am sure this will help me in the future, transitioning to a different community as well. These experiences have made me a well-rounded doctor. My empathy and listening skills are invaluable tools when taking care of sick patients. I truly enjoy getting to know them and hearing their stories, and advocating for their wishes.
