Personal Essay: Summer Training In Cross Country

Improved Essays
Cross country was a whole new world for me. My friend invited me to join summer training one year, and it sounded insane. Who, in their right mind, would want to run for long periods of time, in the heat, for fun? On top of that, summer training was at an ungodly hour of 7 in the morning (they’re crazy, I’m telling you). But since she asked me, I tried it out. It sucked. I ran for a good solid 5 minutes, and my body felt like jello. Each hill felt like a mountain. After the first practice, I went home exhausted and sore.

I was pretty sure that going to that practice was the worst decision I have ever made. There was no way I was going back. However, something in the back of my mind told me to try again and see what would happen. So, I dragged

Those measly five minutes became 10, then 25, and then 50. Each hill became easier to run up, and eventually, a whole season of cross country flew by. It was the epitome of “couch-to-5k”. So, who in their right state of mind would want to run for fun? Or wake up five hours too early during summer break to workout? Me.

Looking back on it now, going to that cross country in the summer was actually one of the best decisions I have ever made. Life is kind of funny that way. The thing that seemed the craziest at one point, actually became one of my greatest accomplishments. If you asked me a year ago if I would go run more than a mile for fun, I would just laugh.

It’s these kinds of experiences that push me to do new things (even if it seems crazy at first), make me more open to new ideas, and help me become a better person. There were so many things that I was reluctant to do, like start up a Habitat for Humanity Club at my school or try eating octopus— which is quite delicious by the way— but that little voice in the back of my head is always there to encourage me to do new things. Now, it seems like nothing is impossible, because all I got to do is

Three years ago, as a freshman, I decided to join cross country. This decision has shaped my high school career through the friends I chose to the activities I participated in. Cross country is not an easy sport, though. It requires physical endurance, but more importantly, the mental strength to push past and overcome the obstacle of pain. By sticking with this sport, mental toughness has permeated who I am and helped me go beyond the standards and work my way through trivial challenges and huge endeavors alike.…

Before I arrived at the Southwestern Oregon Community College campus on August 28, I vowed to myself that I would never run cross country for a school again because I never had the opportunity to practice on wooded trails, rather than concrete. But that changed one day, when I explored the campus and realized that there were wooded trails intertwining in every which way in the dark green forest lined with salmon berries and blackberry bushes that were surrounding the Upper Empire Lake. My dream has always been running in the forest, and afterwards swimming in a crystal clear, clean, deep, and refreshing lake after a long run. The Southwestern Oregon Community College Campus would provide superior running trails and a lake to swim in for my dream to come true. Only a few days later, after I explored the campus, I accidentally bumped into the cross country coach, Anthony Collins.…

From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

Bang, the gun sounds. I sprint out of my box, following teammates in pursuit of the leader. The pack of cross country runners appears to envelop me from my parent’s sight. I hurdle toward the first flag, passing competitors right and left. All the rest is a blur, just the pounding of my heart and the thumping of feet as I run, breathing heavier and heavier, twisting and turning through the trails to reach the chute.…

Running has been apart of my life ever since I can remember, my mom and my grandmother have inspired me so much with this sport. It all started when I won my first race in third grade, that was the moment when I really fell in love with running. My sophomore year of cross country is when my running career came to a stop because of my shin hurting, at first I thought it was just shin splints because I had been running hard for the two weeks prior. Then the pain lasted for three weeks and during that time I was icing and doing all different exercises to strengthen my legs. My coach found out and decided to pull me from our first meet of that season and he made me ride the bike for that week, I was devastated because I was finally training…

Running a 5k can be a very difficult task to do but when you can over exceed your expectation and do better than someone that you know is a better runner than you, can make you feel good about yourself. A 5k can be the easiest thing to do in the world if you run as part of your daily workout routine or do it as a sport but it can be a very challenging task as I thought it was when my dad told me about it a week before the race and I really had no time to train. My dad pressured myself to do the race because of my past history of running when I finished 3rd and 4th in my school races in 2nd and 3rd grade but the only downside was that I didn’t run in about 5 years as the 5k took place in 2013 and I didn’t know if I still had that talent in me…
