Saving one dog will not change the world, but surely for that dog, their world is changed forever. Many people looking to acquire a new pet for their household generally have an idea on what type, breed, color, age, or temperament they want in their animal. The most common is people, when looking for a new dog, want a specific breed, such as a Pomeranian or Mastiff. I had been the same way when my family and I started looking for a new dog, initially we looked at Great Danes, then German Shepherds, and other miscellaneous large breeds thrown in as well. Together we’ve accomplished him being able to stay indoors when no one is home, generally with minimal “accidents”, and while he may still be wary of certain body language, he isn’t jumping at every movement. Stewie has learned many new things in the year we’ve owned him, and in turn we’ve learned many things from him as well. I’m looking forward to the many years we have with him, as he isn’t quite two years old yet!
On that September day, I hadn’t thought much about how adopting a dog would change my mindset for the rest of my life, yet now I realize I can never get another pet that isn’t a rescue. Luckily enough, we’ve been rescuing animals for years, including my cat Roxy, our Pom Buster, and my sale barn horse Deveraux. I’ve always known the rounded characters these animals can have, ranging from bad to good, yet always striving to be better.
