Leasing a horse is equivalent to a car payment, and owning a horse demands much more investment. I have always been conscious that my family is not wealthy, and this cognizance manifested as a great awareness of costs. I chose tack and other items to complement my hobby with great care. I never requested a saddle, for my riding centers have always offered saddles to use. I gathered curry combs, hard brushes, a hoof pick, a halter, and other smaller items for good horse care with a focus on durable, long-lasting items. I used homemade fly spray rather than buying expensive professional brands. I was soon prepared for my lessons as much as possible and enjoying myself each week. …show more content…
My already hefty schedule of the bowling team, theatre, several AP courses, and dual credit classes did not allow the time for my hobby. “It’s one thing to ride with your legs, but it’s another to ride with your heart” (Amberley Snyder). Amberley Snyder is a professional rider who’s defiantly lived out the idea that leg muscle is needed in horse riding. She faced a personal tragedy that would have destroyed many others, but to her it was just an obstacle to overcome. When Amberley lost her legs but continued her riding career it not only changed her but the whole equine world.…

In fifth grade, I started taking riding lessons. Once a week, I went to a nice barn to learn how to stay on top of a horse, and I learned how to braid a mane and tail and how to take apart and put together a bridle. When I entered middle school, I entered a new side of the horse world. My neighbor, who owned the horse with a huge head, still had horses and I quickly began to learn how different horses could be kept.…

No matter what else I have on my plate, I know that my horse won't take care of himself. That means waking up extra early before school and stumbling out the door, half asleep to feed the horses and clean the barn even if I didn't feel like it. The kind of dependence that my horses have on me has taught me a level of commitment that I personally believe can't be matched by any other experience. Horses have also taught me to be flexible and have given me a great deal of patience. I've had the privilege to ride and work with many horses since I started riding and if nothing else, it has shown me that nothing works all…

I started to gain a larger respect for the art itself and the commitment and dedication to be able to build a team with a horse. I grew apart from my barn; but I still kept the family I made by riding there. I slowly started to distance myself from the show atmosphere at the barn and started to go to a small family barn instead. The barn was nestled in the Blue Ridge foothills in Sedalia, Virginia. I grew an admiration for the towering appalachian mountains that acted as my ring borders instead of pieces of stained oak.…
