Personal Essay: Pursuing A Degree In Education

Claiming my education is something I began to do my sophomore year or high school. I was not happy at the school I was attending for many reasons, one being that I lived in my brother’s shadow. All the teachers expected me to be just like him. He is highly intelligent, and at the time, very lazy. Teachers assumed that I was just like my brother. One teacher, Mr. Gilbert saw the difference between my brother and me. Mr. Gilbert failed my brother the year before and I was able to make an A in his class. Once he acknowledged that I was in fact not like my brother, I knew I needed a change. I decided to leave my very small private high school of 400 and attend the public school with over 2,000 students. It took telling my parents that I would drop out if I was not able to make the change to the public school. After switching schools, my grades improved and I began to enjoy school, my teachers, and made new friends. …show more content…
I wanted to pursue a degree in Occupational Therapy. I was fearful I would not be accepted into the program and therefore didn’t even try. I decided that teaching elementary school was what I should do instead. After 3 degrees in education and 6 years of teaching I decided that my heart was not in it. This is my first semester back in school since 2012. I plan to claim to education this semester by pursuing a degree that I am passionate about. I have taken many online classes, so I plan to continue what has worked for me in the past with time management and
