Personal Essay: Pursuing A Career In The Army

Ever since I was a kid I never knew what I wanted to do when I grow up and prepare to live on my own. I was like this even up to my junior year of high school, and because of this I even started to slack off since I was so upset with myself not being able to figure out something I thought was so simple to do. That was until I met a recruiter for the army. When I talked to him he opened my mind a little on how I can find out what it is that I would like to do for a career just by saying, “The army can give you a lot of benefits for you and help you look for a career.” This was the beginning of a change in the way I would go about the way I would think and learn in my life. When I talked to the recruiter he told a lot about the army itself …show more content…
Just so I can start getting ready to enlist I had to fill out some paper work that they need so they can see if I am eligible to join the army, then after that I had to prepare myself to take a test called and ASVAB, which they need the scores as well for my enlistment. Once I finished my testing on the ASVAB, the recruiter gave me a list on different jobs that I was capable of doing based on my score. Out of the few options that I liked I decided to pick IT specialist and he reserved the spot for me. After that we signed the rest of my paper work and prepared me for basic training after I finished high school. Once I did graduate high school they started to prepare me for …show more content…
Just by going through reception was a bit difficult since I have never been on my own filling out paper work and dealing with drill sergeants. When I got to actual basic training the drill sergeants were worse than those in reception. After a short while I figured out that I have to learn everything I needed to know so I can get past basic and be able to help the others who were having a harder time than I was. When there was time for me to study I would start to study, when there was time for me to exercise I would exercise. Some of the things I had to learn were how to do first aid, how to use radios, learn the ranking structure, and I even had to memorize the parts of the weapons that we were using. I would do what I could so that not only could I be ready to finish but so others could too. Me and some of the others would get in groups so that we could all study together to make sure we all could do our best to graduate. Even though I got injured and discharged before I could finish basic training I had the satisfaction that I was able to help the others be able to graduate so that they could do what it is that they want to

The U.S. Army had been under a magnifying glass since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. As a result, the Secretary of the Army and the Army Chief of Staff gave directives that the Commanding General of the Training and Doctrine Command lead a review of the Army as a profession from changes that had taken place since the beginning of the wars. The Army as a Profession of Arms is still not defined concretely. My perception of the Army as a Profession of Arms is that we are citizens, volunteers, trained to eliminate the enemy, and entrusted with a moral ethic and duty to serve and protect the rest of the populous of our great nation. We, as volunteers in our profession, have answered a calling that we are committed to something greater and…

In the Army, formal counseling is supposed to happen at set intervals; but, this rarely occurs once you become a Non-Commissioned Officer, or Sergeant. Additionally, it set the tone for the unit I was entering and let me know my limits.…
