One influence in my life that has shaped me is my background. When I was a young girl, my family and I lived in Dandora slums in a single room, which was both the living room and my parents’ bedroom with a curtain separating the two. My two siblings and I shared a small bedroom, which we also used as a kitchen. While in Dandora, we shared a community bathroom different households in the compound. A few years later, we moved from Dandora slums to Kariobangi South slums, a low-income residential estate in northeastern Nairobi, Kenya.
In Kariobangi South, although we still lived in the slums our living situation was better than that of Dandora. Growing up in Kariobangi South slums was tough for me because many people considered it “the ghetto” due to its dirty nature. Living in Kariobangi South, I saw my

The reality of seeing my neighbors stuck in poverty scared me and I knew that the only way to ensure a bright future for myself was through hard work and determination. My plan was to get out of my neighborhood after graduating high school, enroll at a Univerisity gain knowledge and return home to change the state of my community. I believe that my personal background, and my success despite the adversity that I have faced is an essential part of who I am. The first of my struggles came from being born to two teenage parents without at least a high school education, and although my mother went on to get a GED and to college my father did not. Many people in my family had issues with substance abuse and addictions including my father. Although, I was raised by my mother and grandmother, my father’s actions and behaviors negatively impacted my life. My father was verbally and mentally abusive to the people around him, especially when he used alcohol.…

My mother always stressed to me that there were two types of people in the world; those who sit back and deal with what life throws their way, and those who go out and get what they want at all cost. I am the latter. As the daughter of a single teen mom, I have endured my share of triumphs and misfortunes. Growing up in a dead-end and poverty-stricken community known, ironically, as Rich Square, North Carolina, with a population of about 900, I am no stranger to disparities. I can vividly remember sleeping without heat in the coldest of winters and going to school on the first day without any of the name brand clothing that my friends would own, but in the midst of all that encompassed my home life, I persevered.…

The Struggles of Pursuing Higher Education In her essay, “Reclaiming the Promise of Higher Education: Poor Single Mothers in Academe,” Vivyan Adair asserts that higher education should be prioritized for low-income single mothers in order to help them transition out of welfare reliance and to advance themselves and their families into a positive, stable environment. Adair believes that as of 1996, the welfare system has lowered single mothers’ chances of pursuing education by prioritizing the “work-first” policy, making it hard for mothers to find the time to go to school between long hours of work and the expenses of childcare services. Adair makes a valid point that ever since the “reform” of the welfare system, this has caused for limited…

There are a couple of obstacles that have played a major role in me becoming who I am today. I've had naysayers trying to negatively influence my thoughts, and crush my dreams by saying that said I will never amount to anything, or that I should give up on my dreams and get realistic with my goals. A couple years ago I was a completely different person. I was out of shape physically, my academic performance was very poor, and I had a terrible attitude. I grew up in Oakland, California in an area known as Sobrante Park, a low income residential neighborhood bordered by railroad tracks and a creek. An abandoned park with rusted basketball hoops looming over a cracked asphalt court, riddled with weeds sits near the corner of 105th and Edes Avenues, where young men loiter on the sidewalk outside a liquor store. This is my hometown. Growing up in Sobrante Park, I have seen first-hand how poverty affect people. Lack of motivation and optimism crushed the hope and dreams of many people.…
