Personal Essay On A Trip To Mexico

For several years now I have been certain that I would like to major in Public Health during college. Additionally, because I have been exposed to Spanish throughout my whole academic career and have continually expressed interest for the language and culture, I would like to minor in Spanish. Thus, I would like to design a Mercer on Mission which not only addresses and attempts to resolve a growing issue within the world, but also embodies both of my interests—Public Health and Spanish. Due to my interest in Spanish, it is only logical that I would design my Mercer on Mission with the intention of interacting in a Spanish speaking country in order to give the students who participate a chance to engage with native speakers and further develop their Spanish speaking skills. Therefore, I would like to designate the impact of my Mercer on Mission to the country of Mexico because in addition to it being the number one Spanish speaking country in the world, it is the place where I first encountered an issue within the country that I would like to dedicate my Mercer on Mission to solving. …show more content…
While at a soup kitchen, I spoke with a young mother who was expecting soon. It became apparent to me that there was a large breach in the knowledge of maternal and child health care between the country of Mexico and what I was used to in the U.S. Because the infant mortality rate in Mexico is so high, I believe that Mercer on Mission has the potential to lower this statistic by increasing the quality and access to maternal and child health care within the country. Therefore, I would choose to design my Mercer on Mission to set up a pregnancy center in Mexico, with the intention to better the educate women on pregnancies and health

The capitol of the Aztecs, Tenochtitlan, was in existence from the year 1325 until 1521 when it was taken over by Hernan Cortez and his men. Tenochtitlan was located in the Valley of Mexico on an island in Lake Texcoco. It was estimated that the size of this city-state was 8 – 13.5 km2. Tenochtitlan wasn’t the only city-state on this island, Tlatelolco was also located here, Tenochtitlan’s sister city. The group I chose to research was the Hispanic culture. I do not know much about the Hispanic culture nor have had much experience working with this culture. Sometimes it can be hard to work with or surround yourself with people when your cultures are not the same, therefore getting to better know the values and customs of a Hispanic will help me to make sure my clients get the most from me Knowing more about the people that I am dealing with is the best way to ensure a good client to counselor relationship. The Hispanic culture is one of the fastest growing cultural groups in the United States. The U.S. Census data indicates that Hispanics will be the largest minority group by the year 2050 (U.S. Bureau of the Census, 1992).…

Growing up in Mexico, I didn't have the best of everything. I had and still have a hard working family, but as a kid, I would always see my parents struggling to put food on our table for my siblings and myself. To this date, every time I am in contact with my relatives in Mexico they always tell me how much people struggle to provide a living for their families, especially when there is really no place to work or any resources that can help them out with such needs. As of now, life has been treating me well; I have a wonderful wife, an amazing 2 year old son and a baby that is soon to be due and a great job! My motivation to do this mission trip is by putting myself in the shoes of all those people that have to struggle every day and night to…

Healthcare mission trips (HMTs) are not the most effective forms of service and evangelism. HMTs often make the mistake of treating the patient’s body without treating the patient’s spirit. Many countries are suffering from much more simple natural causes such as dehydration and sanitation, and something as simple as digging a well could be the most effective type of evangelism. Each trip requires a heavy financial investment and a specifically qualified group of people. Healthcare mission trips are a waste of time and resources and fail to efficiently serve and evangelize to the world.…

Why I am interested in this culture is due to visiting Cancun, Mexico back in 2011. Before this trip to Cancun, I was unaware of how involved they were in the Roman Catholic religion. Why their religion sparks my attention is because my family is Roman Catholic too. We are very religious and I desire to know how the Mexican culture practices their religion.…
