WHY I CHOSE SOCIAL WORK
Since reaching adolescence, I have had the heart and spirit of a social change proponent. Additionally, I have long been drawn to advocating on the behalf of others and to providing support for others to organize for their interests. For instance, my parents always encouraged me to ask lots of questions and to voice my concerns so, even as a child, I often balked at economic injustice and quality of life issues. However, it was not until I was an adult in a Social Work 101 class that I learned about the role social workers have in actively facilitating societal egalitarian reform. I also discovered that all of the frustration I felt from the cruelty and injustice that I witnessed, to that point, could be channeled into a focus on “solution building” and unconditional positive regard for others. I further realized that I had the natural skills of compassion and respect for the dignity of others.

As service providers, we have the most contact with clients, thus we possess a unique perspective based on these experiences. I began to feel like social workers were often dismissed and our one on one experiences with a service population was highly undervalued. I realized that I needed an additional skill set to effectively advocate for a population on all fronts and knew that a legally trained mind would be immensely helpful. I decided to become an attorney but always knew that I would never leave social work
