Personal Essay: My Personal Literacy Autobiography

Personal Literacy Biography It was long time ago, and certain things were different than today. The memories of my childhood about learning to read are memories of bonding with my Dad. He taught me the times table and the alphabet, but I can’t remember when I actually started reading, most probably I learned from him. In third grade, as a catholic, I had the communion done, an important event in our town, since most of the population was catholic, we had a priest coming to give us blessing and teach us few bible things. Anyway, for the special occasion the teacher, the same for all five years of elementary school, gave me a book as a gift. It was a religious book, “Escape in Egypt”. I loved to read that story over and over, loved also to watch at the illustrations. There weren’t any libraries in our town and not even at school, they were in the big cities. The only books available for us were the textbooks that we were reading every day for school. Before achieving the communion, I had to participate to religious classes where learning the prayers, from a book, was the goal. So, I would say that home, school, and church helped me to develop the curiosity and the knowledge to appreciate literacy. When my children were young, I bought many books, and I was reading to them every day, especially to my first born Sara. Both of my children love to read, but Sara is a fervent reader. These memories value literacy as an important principle in instruction, and reflecting on the teacher that made a difference in my life, I consider my role as a teacher unique, and always renewed to learn and to transfer the joy of learning, making also, an impression in students’
