Personal Essay: My Passion For Mechanical Engineering

The true definition of an engineer changes depending on the person defining it. For an infant in the depths of the Saharan desert, an engineer is the person who fixes the pump that brings water to her village; for a teenager hooked on video games, an engineer is the messiah who reboots his virus-stricken computer right back up to normal.

Amongst this variety of definitions, however, lies a singular fundamental linking factor: an engineer is someone who makes a positive impact in your life by creating innovative devices using the resources at hand. What makes an engineer great, and what sets the exceptional engineers apart from the ordinary ones, is their heightened ability to effectively gauge the needs of society at a given period in time,

A defining moment for my passion for mechanical engineering came right at the beginning of college as I, a wide-eyed freshman, stared in awe at our Mechanical Workshop professor who deftly cut and welded a delicate metal sheet into a perfect square tray. It was a very simple job, one that I was able to replicate satisfactorily in the coming weeks, but those initial emotions of excitement and wonder have stuck with me ever since. For the past 6 semesters, I haven’t missed a single opportunity to get my hands dirty in our department’s workshops and machine laboratories. Through 3 years of machining workpieces to perfection and learning the ins and outs of engines and compressors, I have made it a point to approach each task with the same amount of vigour and meticulousness that I had the day I began my …show more content…
As part of the Literary, Debate, and Quiz Club, of which I was President in my 3rd year, I have organised over 100 literary events both inside and outside of the college. I was part of the founding committee that conceived Manipal’s annual National Level Debate Tournament, and I subsequently served as Convener for the tournament’s second edition. I have participated in and won a number of debates, quizzes and public speaking competitions. My experiences as Head Boy of my school in class 12, coupled with my tenure as President of the literary club in college, have enabled me to take on leadership roles that have shaped my decision-making and critical thinking prowess. I am now more confident than ever in my ability to manage a team, lead by example, and ensure that all my colleagues and teammates feel

To be a leader, one must first earn the trust and respect of one’s peers and become someone that they would listen to. As a petite, easily distracted female, I often have trouble becoming a person that others listen to outside of the classroom. Thus, becoming this leader and being elected and inducted as the president of the York Suburban Trojan Theatre Club is my most impressive achievement in leadership. At first, people did not know who I was, so I was able to build a reputation for myself by becoming the props crew lead in all but official title. Still, when backstage, I have a reputation as a leader.…

I earned my first leadership role at the age of two. At that age, I became my sister’s role model. It was up to me to teach her the tricks of the trade for everything-- from tying her shoes to studying for her first math test. Although I didn’t have any designated leadership positions during my early years of high school, it was the similarly intimate, accidental moments of leadership that colored my participation in my extracurriculars.…

Leadership is a characteristic that has not always come naturally to me, despite the fact that I enjoy talking to and working with people. I just never considered myself a leader. However, an opportunity to lead presented itself in my journalism class after being on staff for two years as a photographer. At the end of my junior year, I applied and interviewed to become photo editor. Being photo editor this year has given me the courage to take control and learn how to give direction to others.…

My past laid out upon a table. My GPA, my resume, my test scores. An unfamiliar man whom I met for the first time was frowning, turning around in his creaky red chair, while hurriedly trying to contextualize my life with just a few pieces of paper. For 15 minutes, he sat there, unhappy, tapping his foot, analyzing what I’ve “done” with my life. He took a sip of water and suggested that I go to community college.…

Potential Vice-President of the Class of 2018 As stated by John C. In Student Affairs we can challenge students to think creatively, speak boldly, and lead fiercely in their college careers. Students attend college to gain knowledge and learn at a higher level of thinking, to me that means we must challenge them to adapt and learn more about themselves, the world they live in, and how they would like to fit into the world around them. This concept is greatly encouraged by the Social Change Model of Leadership Development, a framework that encourages students to learn about integrity, authenticity, inclusion, meaning making and collaboration (Komives, 2011). As Student Affairs professionals, we can provide students with leadership experience and challenge their developmental growth through leadership, teaching students that leadership is not only about holding a position but rather the behaviors of working towards shared goals and ideals (Komives,…

In middle school, I found myself to be more quiet, shy, and less outspoken than my peers. I joined all the same clubs and had the same interests as my peers, such as student council and National Junior Honors Society, but my introverted personality kept me from exploring new leadership roles. As I finished middle school and began my high school career, I brought my introverted personality with me. As first semester progressed, I joined clubs in school that encouraged an open mind and voice, specifically Key Club International, the world's largest, student-led, community service organization. In Key Club, I met students with open minds and strong leadership qualities.…

I can still remember the day when my parents told me the phrase, “You are a leader, not a follower.” It was in kindergarden right after I told them about a few girls who were making fun of a friend of fine, and I decided to stop them and defend her. When my parents told me that phrase, it definitely stuck with me throughout my life. I think that’s a phase most kids hear time to time in their childhood.
