Personal Essay: My Life As A Turtle

Decent Essays
Life as a turtle is pretty simple, I don’t really do much all day. I typically like to pass time by swimming in nearby bodies of water, or by roaming around on land looking for things to eat. Although I like to spend my time roaming around on the land and in the water, I have to watch out for any predators that may be lurking nearby. The environment I live in contains many abiotic and biotic factors, such as water, soil, and other animals. I can easily be identified by my obvious characteristics, and not only am I a wild free roaming animal, but I can also be kept as a pet! My life is not all that interesting, but here is an inside look at what makes me a turtle. As a turtle, I am both a terrestrial animal and also an aquatic animal, however …show more content…
My domain is Eukarya which means I am a part of the same domain as the kindgoms Plantae, Animalia, Protista, and Fungi. Of these four kingdoms, only Plantae, Animalia, and Fungi can be seen with the naked eye. As a Eukaryotic organisms, I am made up of eukaryotic cells. In other words I am made up of living cells with membrane bound nuclei and organelles. In addition to containing membrane bound organelles and nuclei, I am also multicellular. Being a Eukaryotic organism can be very complex. In addition to being a Eukaryotic organisms, I also belong to the phylum Chordata. As a chordate, I have many distinct characteristics that make up who I am. For example, I have specialized cells which means I have many different types of cells and tissues within my body such as skin cells, muscle cells, and sensory cells. I also have bilateral symmetry which means that if you were to cut me in half, God forbid, I would be somewhat symmetrical on each half. Also a characteristic of mine as a chordate is the fact that my gut develops from back to front. In other words I am known as a deuterostome. All of these things make up who I am and mean that I belong to the domain Eukarya, kingdom Animalia, and phylum …show more content…
As a youngin myself I will not start reproducing until an older age, about 15-20 years old, and even then that is still considered pretty young for a turtle to start reproducing. It is believed that for the first 15 years of a turtle’s life we stay in hiding for fear that we may be eaten by predators. However, I believe this is a myth because I am younger than 15 and, like I said, I spend the majority of my time roaming around without a care in the world. I guess I am just adventurous. Anyway, most young turtles spend their time hiding out in seaweed patches until they are large enough to defend themselves from predators. The most popular places to mate are near the beach, but only the wealthy turtles can afford to mate there. Unfortunately, I am not one of those turtles, so I will probably have to settle for the lakeside when it comes my time to mate. The matting process first begins with a courtship. The male turtles will follow us female turtles around sniffing our cloaca, also known as our butts. Once the male turtles find a female that they like, they splash their front legs around and rub the side of the female’s head. If the female turtle approves of the male, then she gives him the ok and the process begins. Once the sperm reaches the eggs, female turtles leave their body of water, go on land, dig a hole, and lay their eggs where they will fertilize and grow until ready to be hatched. The

As Canadians manipulate natural habitats for farmland development and urbanization, the consideration for wildlife management of species including the Blanding’s Turtle becomes increasingly important. Recognized as an umbrella species, the Blanding’s Turtle may be a representative animal for its habitat and therefore monitoring its health may assist in selecting appropriate conservation strategies. Recognizing the decline in the size of many Blanding’s Turtle populations, several studies have investigated the behaviour and life-history of this species to better understand the factors threatening its existence. In a study monitoring the movement patterns of freshwater turtles, Gibbons (1986) noted that excursions by females for suitable nesting…

What most people do not think of is that while they are very alike in some ways, they are two extremely different, yet super frightening hunters. Both of these reptiles are members of the reptilian family Crocodylia, however they are from two different families. There are a sum of 25 types of crocodilians (belonging to the Crocodylia family), including these two. Crocodilians date back 260 million years, that’s 65 million years more than the dinosaurs.…
