My academic success did not falter, and most of my challenges originate not from failing to achieve scholarly goals, but from external sources interfering with how far my drive to succeed is willing to go. Usually it ends with a completed assignment, but on rare occasions the pang of loneliness has been distracting. Realizing that I had barely connected with anyone in high school is still a predicament I would rather forget. This would be the situation if not for the reminder it provided that if inhibitions and doubt rule my life I will undoubtedly stagnate. When I was younger, I struggled to support any friendships for an extended period of time. Before I moved to GCMS School district, I had previously attended three separate schools for the same few reasons. My parents could not afford to live where we did, one or both lost their job, or the environment was not suitable for our family. Moving so often made it difficult to keep in contact with old friends, and even more difficult to make new ones. As I was shy and introverted, it was an intimidating and terrifying situation.…

I had to be homeschooled for the rest of the school year and I had to miss my freshman football year. Needing a teacher to come to your house because you're incapable of going to school felt awful. But none of the people I considered friends checking up on me while feeling nothing but sepulchral, that felt worse to me. Ever since I’ve been taking precautions as to who I become friends with. I began to work a lot harder as a student, seeing that it was important to get good grades. However, this affected my life with friends in later years. As 7th grade started, my friend life came to a definitive close. I struggled greatly with making friends, primarily because one of my good friends had left Trafton in 6th grade to become home schooled, and because all of my other friends from elementary schools attended other schools. I attempted to make friends with people who I previously wasn’t friends with, and that resulted in many problems for me.…

As a child, going to college was a foreign to me. I didn’t see it as a priority, it was not important to me because I hardly even knew it existed. I was your average 7 year old boy running the streets of Albuquerque, New Mexico during the summer, coming home with a black eye and busted lip from fist fights, coming home to a garbage filled apartment, coming home to find my mother lying on the torn up leather couch out cold reeking of booze with a bottle in her hand, coming home late at night to find 4 year old sister with autism still awake at 11:00pm not eating, I came home every night being afraid whether or not we would have enough money to even pay the bills when they came around. Having no money made it even hard during the school year, I wore torn up, smelly, and stained clothes and was made fun of constantly.…

We all listened to the same bands, loved the same teen heartthrob, and all had a similar personality. It took losing a core group of friends of mine transitioning into freshman year to show me that it’s okay to be your own person. I will say freshman year was a huge struggle for me to go through without being friends with the people that I had grown closest to in the 8th grade and years prior to 9th grade, but in the long run it has benefitted me more than I could have ever imagined that year. I now am not afraid to be alone sometimes and not always hang out with a group of people or one person every weekend. I’m okay with spending time by myself just relaxing in my room or grabbing some lunch at bread co by myself when I can.…
