Originally born in the Dominican Republic on March 21, 1975, I was the first of two sons, and extremely shy. My given name is Reynaldo and my brother, Erich, who is 18 months younger than me were raised by a well-meaning, intelligent, career-military father, Amable, and a strong, independent, nurturing mother, Dinorah. We were all we had as we traveled the world together with my father’s job and although we were under the protection of caring parents, I developed extreme anxiety attacks with any social interactions I had. On the other hand, my brother seemed to revel in the experience of our constant nomadic lifestyle, moving around from place to place and school to school. This behavior led to a lot of developmental issues and developmental classes that propelled me further into my anxiety. I began to view school as the job I no longer wanted to wake up for, but had to attend regardless. My parents were worried but did not know how to help me and soon after finishing school I entered the retail workforce. “I’ll show them, I said to myself.” I chose this line of work expecting it to somehow cure me of my introverted ways.
