Personal Essay: My Interests In Special Education

My interest’s in special education goes back to my high school years, where I was taken out for testing, and for help with homework. I was that student that had an IEP and was in a resource room twice a day to get help. It was hard for me to understand why I had to get taken out for exams, homework or even immense projects. Well it helped me get good grades and pass exam usually. I couldn’t understand to why I wasn’t a “normal” student and to be able to take an exam in the class room or be able to pass them with a high grade. While I was in elementary school, I had to get tested a lot for academics to see what was going on. Finally came to a conclusion that I have a disability and an IEP, bad test anxiety and that’s why I had an IEP in school. …show more content…
I want to be the teacher that is there to help her students understand, listen and be patient with them all the time. My dream is to make a difference in the life of a child, whether I’m teaching in an inner city school that has a poor special education system or in another country that lacks one entirely. I choose to go to Grad school eight months after I finished my bachelor’s degree because, I didn’t want to wait too long and then not attend. I told myself I needed somewhat of a break in between the two because; my brain was mentally and physically drained. I decided I wanted to start my grad classes in August 2016 and told myself it won’t be too much longer till I am totally done with my degree, that I just need to get it done and over with. I 've also had the opportunity to work in the field doing field hours in classrooms, and they have been both enjoyable and enlightening, providing me with a new and different perspective on the world in which we live. As an Early Childhood/special education studies graduate, it feels achieving the Early Year 's Professional Status is a natural progression in my career. I truly love being around kids as I am working with young ones at my current job now. I am usually working in the fours room which is student’s that are four and five year olds. I believe that we learn from students and they teach us different things all the time. There creative minds, when I see these young student draw they will tell you what it is and to us it’s just a lot of scribbles. Working with younger children has always been my dream and I am very passionate about it. I feel that my strengths include being a good listener; I have good communication skills which I feel are essential for an Early Years worker. I am a hard working and enthusiastic person who thoroughly enjoys a challenge and the responsibility being placed in them, I am a creative person who enjoys designing and making resources which can be used in planned activities my placements.
