Personal Essay: My Experiences In Iraq

Ever since I was a small girl, I have always been fascinated with human dynamics. I intuitively knew that beyond the surface of the titles and roles, there is a real human being inherently driven by the collection of life stories forming the basis of their behavior. As a society, that collective behavior comprised of individual life stories form the fabric of social and cultural identity. Therefore, I believe that the solution to many complex global challenges we face today require substantial consideration of the human domain. This belief and my desire to contribute to the solution are the primary factors that led me to volunteer for the assignments I’ve had in the military. I wanted to do jobs that worked closely with the local populace …show more content…
In Iraq I was a medic and had opportunities to talk to local nationals every day. In Afghanistan I was a part of Village Stability Operation (VSO) that gave me an opportunity to really be immersed in the rhythm of life in rural Afghanistan. From my deployments, I have gathered many anecdotes that confirm my belief on the importance of drawing out the life stories to build rapport. It is that sense of trust and mutual understanding of our shared identity as fellow human beings that have been the greatest driving force for cooperative efforts towards peace and stability. Conversely, when the understanding breaks down, the situation almost always takes a turn for the …show more content…
However, I regret that I studied mostly science and engineering subjects during my undergraduate years. I would like to study humanities in graduate school to have a formal education and view the field through the lens of a critical thinker. Graduate school would offer me the opportunity to study topics that interest me in depth and provide a forum for thoughtful discussion. Having mostly learned out of necessity for my line of work, I know that there are gaps in my “practical” education that I would like to fill. Studying at Mount Saint Mary’s University Graduate would finally allow me to have the time to do so in an educational and values based

In reading Harry & Mary Meinhardt’s legacy, I was reminded of my own career in the military. I also enlisted in the United States Army right out of high school, at the tender ager of 17. And much like Harry, I proudly served for twenty-six years. I rose the rank of Sergeant First Class before transitioning to a Warrant Officer. Having an education has always been of value to me and so has the idea of helping others.…

During my time in the Army, I have had plenty of obstacles, one in particular would be when I was a RTO (radio tech operator) and we were attached to another battalion to go raid a village. We patrolled all night until we walked twelve miles to our location avoiding helicopters flying in the sky looking for us. Once we finally set up an OP (observation post) we had a team go out and recon the village and we established a plan on how we were going to attack the village. My squad only had about nine of us, so we were not initially part of the main element to go in and assault the village. However, as we started creeping up to the first obstacle, a fence, helicopters started patrolling for us again.…

She was one of the girliest girls I knew since grade school, with her stylish culottes and pink garments of all different shades for all different occasions. She was the epitome of a mixture between pure innocence and quirk that boldly took her rightful place in the middle of my heart. Mary Anne wasn’t just all of that; she was also my affectionate girlfriend, my warm-hearted best friend who I could talk about anything with, from the most trivial things to the very meaning of our whole existence. At the time, all I could feel was the absolute joy that I got from spending my time with her. We had our entire happiness in the future planned out, a dream wedding and all, but maybe that was the reason why I wouldn’t have ever imagined that I would be feeling so lost and empty just a few years later, alone and missing a part of myself.…

It was a rainy morning in Seattle, and I wore my Army dress uniform. Stepping off the bus, I ran 100 yards to the entrance of the Airport. After I purchased my ticket and checked my bags, I headed to the bar. It was the time of the winter equinox, and I was headed home with my discharge in my duffle bag. I suppose I should have worn my civilian clothes, but I had been stateside six months, and the comradeship I experienced in Vietnam had yet to loosen its grip on me.…

One of the most horrific terrorist attacks that have ever taken place on U.S. soil were the events that took place on September 11, 2001. These events tragically took the lives of tens of thousands of people and ultimately, changed America forever. The aftermath of these catastrophic attacks is complex and has stimulated a lot of debate and controversy over the past 15 years. Our leader at the time, George W. Bush, made a risky decision when he decided to go to war with Iraq. Since then, I firmly believe this decision is regrettable and has ineffectively communicated our nation’s initiatives in nonverbal context.…

The willingness to fight for one’s country was once perceived as a heroic crusade but has since been left behind in the folklore of history. This fabled heroism was exhibited on a global stage during World War II by the pilots of the Army Air Force. One such pilot, eager to enlist, was an exuberant 22 year old John “JR” Plowden. In my interview with him, I realized, that even through the atrocities of war, goodness and peace can still be found. He was more than happy to be part of the war and made the most out of it.…

The number one thing I learned in today’s class on cross-cultural competencies was how important situational awareness can be when it comes to counterinsurgency tactics. I knew that it’s important to get a complete feel for your environment, so you can figure out the difference between what the people want and what they need. It’s imperative for a counterinsurgency team to become culturally proficient within their area of operation (AO). This comes with time and educating yourself with the society within your footprint. It’s not always important to know how the entire country works, but more about the people you interact with on a daily basis.…

My family has experienced a major shift in the past three generations, the shift was from a farming family to a suburban family. My great grand parents on both sides were farmers and expected their kids to be farmers because that 's all they really knew back then. When my dad’s parents were young, they took over the family farm. A person from the very beginning of his/her life is a part of something, a family, a nation, a race, a community etc. it is such a natural thing that people never realize how important the knowledge of the fact that they’re a part of something is. Mostly because the absence of it is fate to very few types of people and most commonly these people are soldiers. This problem is presented, as one of the issues the soldiers have to deal with, in a war novel “The Things They Carried” written by Tim O’Brien. He presents few cases where characters had to deal with this problem.…

Because of its geographical location, it has been through many conflicts throughout its history that date back to biblical times, formerly known as Mesopotamia. Other countries along its borders to the east and west are Syria, Jordan and Iran. One of the main terrain features of Iraq consists of extensive plains that cover the Central and southeastern parts of the country as well as an enormous dessert that covers the west and southeast region spreading across to the west of Kuwait.…
