As a young armadillo growing up in Texas during the 1820s, my life was peaceful and happy. The Federalists who held power in Mexico left me, my fellow armadillos, and the Anglo Americans alone to enjoy and work the land. However, in 1829, the Centralists gained control of the Mexican government and the freedom we enjoyed gradually eroded. As the Mexican government imposed more regulations on the Anglo Americans, the tension which had existed between the two groups due to the Nacogdoches land grant, become even more palpable.…
Brownsville, Texas is the town that I was raised in and can still call home. It was rich with Mexican culture and delectable, greasy tacos but it was still an economically disadvantaged city meaning that there were never enough resources to guide students to better opportunities. Of course, I never knew I was deprived of such an apparent luxury until I came to The University of Texas at Austin. When this realization came, I became frantic because of how behind I felt. I began looking for all sorts of resources and opportunities the university had to offer.…
Coming to Houston from a country where opportunities are very limited and economy is a challenge for the youthful, has made the last two years a little rough and hopeful at the same time for me and my family. Therefore, school is the most important in my life, after my family; I dedicate my time and my efforts to not become just the first professional in my family, but also to be an exemplary person in society thanks to the values that my parents have instilled in me. Before coming to Houston, I studied three years of Industrial Design in Colombia; although I loved my career, I think that I was too young (15 years old) to appreciate what school was providing me and to be sure what I wanted to do in life. Once I got here I understood that what…
When I was 16 I moved to from California to Texas. During this time, I assume everyone in Texas wears a cowboy hat, boots, talks in a southern accent such as saying y’all and other such stereotypes. I assume the general understanding of Texas from what I was taught as a kid in movies, music, and shows. Once I moved to Texas that that type of thought was used against me, my classmates assume I probably l go to the beach and surf and have met plenty of celebrities when I lived in California. This is an example of REPRESENTATIVENESS HEURISTIC to judge or presume a someone or something relying on past experiences and mental representations to a new situation creating a particular group.…

I moved from from Texas to Arizona last year. It was a really difficult move. I lived there my whole life, so I had to leave everyone and everything I loved. We had some neighbors who became like family to me, I loved those people. They didn’t have much money at all; one parent was a drug addict and the other a dealer.…
I am a dad and I have three great children. One night when we were downstairs watching a movie when the kids were asleep, I said to my wife, Amy, “I want to move to a more exceptional place so the kids can grow up in a better environment,” Amy said she wanted to do that too. “ It would take a long time and I wanted to find a new job because my original job is moving to Texas.” Right now we were living in a small town called Eagle. I told the kids if it was a good idea.…
About two years ago, I moved to Grass Valley, CA. Truly I tell you, this was a brand new experience. My whole life was centered around the city of Elk Grove, my previous city. My friends, family, and everything were there. The day I moved was exciting, a chance for new experiences, but at the same time I felt something new: pain.…
One cold and dreary day in January, I got home from an uneventful day at school. I never would have guessed what was about to happen or thought that this would ever happen to me. I was just a quiet freshman in high school. My father sat down with my family and told us that we were about to move to Texas. I was both shocked and a little excited to move because I’ve always wanted to go south.…

When I was five years old, my family drove to our rural Texas vacation house for a family retreat. Including the time spent traveling, the trip lasted approximately two weeks. While staying in Texas, my family and I participated in various fun-filled adventures and activities throughout the countryside. Later on, when my cousins joined us, the vacation house was filled to the brim with young, energetic kids and tired, irritated parents. With a house full of mischievous children, the trip became much more enjoyable for me; I vividly remember wonderful experiences with my cousins.…
