I was born in Hardin on February 12, 1809. I spent most of my childhood in Indiana from ages 7-21. I didn't always agree with my father but we had the same view on slavery. I helped out a lot on the farm and read when I could as a young boy. I had less than a year of formal education. When I was 14 my family joined a church and while i did not regularly attend I still became a person of deep religious feelings. I married Mary Todd on November 1842. We had four kids but only three lived through adolescence. I moved to New Salem, Illinois in July of 1831. I fought in the Black Hawk War in 1831. While I had only been there for less than a year I was quickly nominated captain. I served for ninety days but I never fought in battle. I was lucky …show more content…
When the results of my election were clear the South made an awful decision. On December 20, 1860 Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, Texas, Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia decided to leave the Union. The South claimed all of the Forts in the South and trying not to be hostile I only ordered a restock of Fort Sumter. The Southern States viewed this as an act of war and the Civil War began. Within two days of the attack on Fort Sumter, an army of 75,000 men had formed. I always knew that slavery was a moral wrong but I always knew the Constitution allowed it. In 1862 I used the war against the South as an excuse to free the slaves in the Southern States saying that the South could use the slaves against us. In 1863 the Union had two major victories against the South, one in the East and one in the West. In the West we won the battle of Vicksburg, and in the East we won the important battle of Gettysburg with cost many tens of thousands their lives. These victories insured that I would win the election of 1864. I was elected again and was inaugurated on March 4, 1865. In my inaugural address I spoke of greater rights for African Americans and my goals for reconstruction. On April 9, 1865 general Robert E. Lee finally surrendered in Appomattox. On April 14, 1865 I was

This was enough evidence for South Carolina to approve an Ordinance of Secession and follow up with an article explaining its decision to secede followed by invitation to other states to join the Confederacy. The deep south states that joined South Carolina in abdicating from the United States were Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Texas, and Louisiana. After these states seceded, the attack on Fort Sumter in 1861 by the Confederates, initiated Abraham Lincoln to request for volunteers to put down the revolt. This request by the president was seen as a breach and in direct conflict of his role and responsibilities which exceeded his constitutional powers by not waiting on Congressional approval. This decision caused four more states form the upper south to join the deep south.…

Spanning four years from 1861-1865 and resulting in over 620,000 casualties, the American Civil war is undoubtedly the most severe war that the United States had withstood as a relatively young nation at the time. The war was between the United States of America or the Union versus the eleven southern states that had succeeded from the Union, otherwise known as the confederacy. The war had caused political, social, and economic conflict to occur all throughout the United States, between the industrial Northerners and the agricultural Southerners, which produced organic crops such as cotton, tobacco and sugarcane. The south relied heavily on the production that the slaves produced as it contributed to their economic and social livelihood, whereas…

Reconstruction refers to the time period directly following the Civil War, where America attempted to bring both the white and black south back into the Union. Reconstruction was therefore extremely difficult, as whites were dealing with their loss and the fact that they’d have to live under those that beat them during the war, and that they’d have to live along side their newly freed slaves, those who they were bought up their entire lives to believe they were superior to. The main thing blacks desired straight out of slavery was freedom. They wanted freedom from white men, from being owned, from everything that they were.…

(675)Civil War Essay Questions: (337)Essay 1: The foundation of the American Civil War was the increasing problem of slavery in the Antebellum South. In the early 19th century, the moral issue of human slavery clashed with the original motives of the Founding Fathers, which had sought to bring equality and freedom to all people—even African Americans. Slavery was a major issue for the North, which sought to eradicate the immoral enslavement of human beings as a negative consequence of colonialism in the United States. The second cause of the Civil War the moral activism through the Abolitionist Movements in the North that sought to end slavery as a major political and social movement.…

I do not have a particular stance for or against Calexit, but I am open to considering the movement. I both agree and disagree with Dave Marin’s opinion that California has a better opportunity to start towards the path of secession. Our Constitution, by his explanation, seems to dictate that we can secede, but I see a possibility for another civil war. If this situation comes to a civil war, I do not see California winning by a landslide, unless the state receives aid from Washington and Oregon, and they can create their own country of some Pacific States of America. Of course, it is not as if Calexit was not a movement before with social, economic, and geographic differences from the rest of the country.…

Secondly, since southern states were not confident that Lincoln would keep his hands off their “right” to slavery, South Carolina lead a wave of secession by withdrawing from the Union in 1860. The southern states that followed South Carolina’s lead were the states of Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, Georgia, and Texas (Hine, 2014). It seems the separation of the southern states from the Union was the tip of the iceberg leading up to the Civil War. The country was severely divided on many fronts, but notably over the controversy of…
