Personal Essay: How Adversity Has Changed My Life

Improved Essays
Suppose you were beckoned into your supervisor's office one Friday afternoon. Your boss regrettably informs you that due to economic downturn your position has been eliminated. You have been laid off. How are you going to react to that? Personally I would be quite upset, but depending on the person and the situation the reaction might be very different. In times of adversity I find myself behaving in many different ways. While comparing my life to the story, it seems that I am, at times, in the position of the carrot, egg and the coffee bean. Sometimes I am a carrot because when things hurt me I get quiet and soft. I don’t say very much and I keep my distance from whatever it is that has affected me negatively. For example, while hostessing at my current job some of the waitresses do not agree with the decisions I make concerning their placement and workload. They rudely confront me about it on a daily basis so I try to keep my distance from those certain people and let it roll off my back. For some reason it tears me up when people get upset with me. I feel like I have let them down. I become very emotional and the littlest things can make me burst into tears. When I am like the egg I seem to become snappy and rude. I do not cry and I hardly speak to anyone. This happens more commonly …show more content…
I try to be positive at all times, especially around other people. When my close friends or family are going through a difficult time I feel like I should be the most positive person in the room. I try to spread my good vibes. I have found that staying happy in a sad or upsetting time can help you and the person facing the adversity. For example, a few years ago my sister’s dog wandered into the road and lost his life. At that time I felt like it was my job as a sister to be as supportive and as encouraging as I could be. I tried to keep conversations light and upbeat and make her laugh when I

Going back over my fifth grade notebooks has not once failed to make me laugh and cringe at my boy troubles and lists of cute boys in my class. I love words. I love reading them, writing them and interpreting them. Through all phases of life, I had a usual nature to try and write my feelings down and call it art, even if it were scribbles on a Post-It note. Same goes for the song stanzas I wrote in seventh grade that were really loosely based on a Taylor Swift song and are still relatable today.…

Between a weed and a flower, I assume I am more like a flower than a weed. I think I am more like a flower is because I love to be around with a lot of people, and I want other people to think that I am an altruistic person. I believed that everyone in this world will never want to be ugly. However, I am an introvert, but I am practicing to be an extrovert person. For example, when I lived in Vietnam, I’m not a good studier.…

Skills: Some skills that I possess are my abilities to multitask, work with technology, be cooperative, listen carefully, and follow instructions. I believe I am able to do my best work both alone and in a group, because I can be cooperative and work well with others, but also be independent. I enjoy having instructions to work with, or someone to tell me what I have to get done. Working with technology is another one of my skills that is important to have in this time, when everything is fast-paced and constantly changing. FYS Final Courage has been a message and something I personally try to achieve ever since my younger brother, Julian, was born in 2011. He was born prematurely, and with a lot of health complications and other factors that my family has to still deal with today. This experience has made me want to pursue a career in physical therapy. Although I love the subject, I do not want physical therapy to define my life as a whole. I enjoy being a part of a diverse community that gives me an opportunity to explore topics I find interesting and influences the way I live.…

Throughout my life I have fought and successfully moved on in situations that many people don’t even think of having to go through. For example, I fell in love with a boy (I know cliché) but I did and he changed my life and who I was. I thought he was the one and I did everything for him. I gave him parts of me that I, to be honest, wasn’t ready to give.…

In life, a great many of us have had moments where we felt we did not have the strength or courage to conquer or face our fears. I also used to feel that way about a lot of things, however one day, when I was younger, I had an experience that helped me realize that if you take the initiative and give it your all, and along with some help from a friend, you can in fact overcome your fears no matter how daunting or difficult the task may seem. When I was little I loved to play outside with my friends, as many kids do. We would usually play on a big playground that my grandpa had built for me and my siblings near my house. My friends and I enjoyed it very much because we could play on it whenever we wanted and not have to have our parents take us to a park in town or have to be there with us and watch us.…

My life is like a cycle journey. I have meticulously built it up piece by piece since my very first day on the planet. Though it seems to turn out beautifully; there are still some missing pieces; as a result, this is where my life journey has begun: the journey to find missing pieces to complete my life. When I was a little girl, my mother taught me how to ride a bicycle. She held on to the back of my tiny bicycle and said “Keep pedaling, daddy is waiting on the other side”, I looked up and then saw my father opening his arms widely as if he was waiting for me to reach there soon.…
