Personal Essay: How A Midwifery Changed My Life

As I see the sun rises up, hear the birds’ chirps, and hear the chickens utters a loud, harsh noise. It’s a new day and another day in the farm in Oriental Mindoro. As I got up from bed, I thought of how I should spend my last day here with my family. I then decided to head downstairs and I could immediately overhear loud conversations and then I saw my brothers and sisters as they prepare the table and gather around the table. As I sat down at the corner of the table, we started recalling our childhood memories. From chasing one another to tackling each other in the mud which eventually leads up to climbing up one of many mango trees in the farm. Times with my family are very golden. Its always have been full of laughs and sharing …show more content…
Being able to help other people and show compassion to other people, especially when some of them are in their most vulnerable state, was something thing that I truly love and cherish. For example, being able to share stories with other women, being able to help them during their pregnancy, and being able to provide health education and parenting support after their delivery. My fondness to kids also transcends in my craft as I was able to supervise some of the newborn from time to time. Later on, because to the huge support system for one another, one by one, some of my siblings were also able to create a big milestone for themselves and their own family. As time passed by, everything was going right to the point where I think it was all a dream until my beloved father became very ill. It was very hard to take in, he’s been a real model and inspiration throughout my journey. Clearly, it affected the whole family, especially my mother. They have been inseparable to each other. Having nine kids together and working as hard as they can to provide for all their children. Life is not molded to be perfect. The most important thing is to enjoy every bit of it and experience everything to the fullest because you don’t know what will happen

It was not hard for me to decide who I wanted to interview for this assignment; my mother has given birth naturally to four kids which simply demonstrates one of the reasons why she is the strongest person I know. My mother was extremely young when she first got pregnant at the age of eighteen while still attending high school. She did not know anything about being a mom or what the birthing process would be like so during her first pregnancy she decided to take a Lamaze class to help her have a better understanding what her pregnancy and birthing process would be like. She had her first child at a young age, got married at a young age, and got divorced at a young age, but now my mom is the strongest woman I know especially after everything she has gone through in such a short time. A year after my parents got married I was born and was the fourth child my mom delivered, but being my dad’s first and only child.…

“Hew out of the mountain of despair to a stone of hope, and you can make your life a splendid one.” This is my grandfather’s favorite quote. He kept saying that to me when he tried to pass on his life experience to me. Not paid much attention to it, I never thought that hope is the power to wake up my sleepy potentials. It was not until have seen the Shawshank Repetition directed by Frank Darabont that I realized how the hope can motivate me when I suffered.…

For five years, I went to the Boys and Girls Club during the summer, and once a week we would visit the retirement homes to play bingo and conversate with the elderly residents. Unlike many of the other kids, I was more fascinated with watching the interaction between the nurses and their patients rather than playing games. I watched as the nurses would walk over to patients, adjust their blankets, and pillows as they showed so much compassion. I remember that day so vividly watching the nurses care for others so generously as if it was first nature and I looked at them with the utmost respect. Since that day, I have aspired to be a nurse and to care for others because, at the end of the day, that could be me, or a loved one, you never know…

I began the day in a dream-like state, hypnagogic to be precise, as my melancholy was embellished with a familiar face at an unfamiliar place. I pace through a cemetery filled with heartbreak accompanied by sorrow. Doing the very thing I can't ever rid myself of, I wondered about each stone head we pass. Hau, Lien, Yen; I lost my trail of thoughts between his peace. The Nguyens have passed and now they hold my thoughts while I catch a glimpse of the flickering sunlight filtering through the leaves as the sun rises.…

For me, choosing to be a part of the midwifery community was not as easy as it may have been for others. The naturopathic profession was not a part of my upbringing. I grew up on antibiotics and doctor’s appointments until I was old enough to realize that it wasn’t solving anything. I knew I wanted to walk my own path, but I wasn’t certain what that was. When I left school, I didn’t follow my dreams; I simply followed the familiar.…

Every Saturday, I distinctly recall the smell of pancakes, bacon, and eggs. The radio would be playing in the background, masked by the overwhelming chatter occurring throughout the house. So many things happening in such a small space: what I remember most, is the sound of laughter, and the smiles that surrounded me. My grandpa hollering because he cannot hear the television, my mother still drowsy from the sleepless night, My grandmother singing to the radio that was barely audible over the commotion, and me, invariably sat looking at all that surrounded me, enthralled at how lucky I was to have a heart so full.…
