I was born in the Guangdong province of China. My mother was a wealthy merchant in the Cantonese province. In addition to that, she was a member of a thirteen member guild of Chinese trade merchants. They acted as representatives for the Qing ruler to manage trade with companies like the British East India Company. My father, Liang Xu worked on a trading post outside the walls of Guangzhou. These posts were referred to as “barbarian houses” by the Guangzhou residents because people all over the world would come to trade at

We slept on a bench until morning. It was cold and rainy and our boots were soaking wet. We sat on the sidewalk, begging for food. A nice, old lady named Mrs. Waterford took us into her boarding house and provided food for us. We were ever so grateful. We were warm happy for the first time in forever as we sat by her fire. She gave us a blanket to cover ourselves as our clothes were drying up. Back in China we took our bed, food, and shelter for granted. We realized we were lucky to be alive, but we were just glad that our long and exhausting journey was over. Mrs. Waterford has a brother, named Charles Morgan who was a merchant in New Bedford who owned a whaling ship. Mrs. Waterford was kind enough to arrange us a job with her brother to get us back on our …show more content…
After we would remove the harpoon from the whale, no one clean up the boat. Because of this, the boat had oil and blood stains bringing in rats, cockroaches, bedbugs, and fleas. The food we ate was mush that was stored in medium sized tubs. We would get paid in relation to the profits we made. Since we were inexperienced we only received 1% of all of the profits, but even that was a great amount compared to the other inexperienced workers on the boat. While we were there we would all be petrified of what would happen after we would shoot the harpoon into the whale. The whale would either come to the boat and sink it, or it would die. We never knew what would happen, so all of our hearts would race until the whale was pronounced

Jake Parson’s mother called it the magic hour: the moment when a day passes into evening, when the earth feels suspended before darkness and slumber. In the gold and reddening light, an easy southwest breeze propelled Jake’s thirty-five-foot sailboat through the Beaufort Inlet for the first time. As he navigated through the channel, he heard the cries of distant seagulls. It was the first land animal he’d heard in days. The last low rays of the sun illuminated the white church steeple and the sails of a windmill on the horizon.…

Knowing that something special was going to happen that day, because she could feel it deep inside her soul, Charity sprung out of bed. Her grandpa had always said that she had the “gift of knowing,” the same as her grandmother, Mi 'thebe, had. Mi’ thebe was a Cherokee name that in English meant Shadowy Moon. As she stepped outside the old, log cabin she took a deep breath of the cool, fresh mountain air and then stretched her back, leaning from side to side to remove the stiffness she felt from sleeping in her not so comfortable bed, which consisted of a straw-ticked mattress atop a wooden bunk that seemed to became flatter each year as she grew older. Her grandfather had built the cabin some fifty-odd years earlier as a wedding gift for…

Sam Selvon's definitive novel about London's West Indians' is noted as being a pinoneering text in Caribbean mirgrant writing. The structure of the novel is episodic, most likely due to the author's acclaimed ability as a short story writer. Although the structure of The Lonely Londoners makes for a less conventional novel, it has the effect of making the work's sense of time more seasonal rather than social. Three things that caught my attention after reading the novel for a second time and having a better understanding of Black British Literature were its use of language and form, it's multiple themes, and of course it's humor that ties all three together. Sam Selvon's lyrical use of language and form realistically depicts the lives of West…

I look up at the sky, and close my eyes. Attempting to imagine myself anywhere else, but on an old stale ship filled with 30 other men for what seemed like decades, although, in reality only measures up to a few weeks. I give up my feeble attempt at day dreaming, open my eyes and look around. Taking in the smells of the salty see and a vague underlying odor of sweat and musk that has accumulated along this never ending journey. But I must admit, I would take this stinky old ship over the guillotine back at home any day.…

Britain 's rule over India is often referred to as the Raj, where roughly about 20,000 or so British officials and troopers ruled over 300 million Indian people. The British almost had complete cooperation from the local Indian princes and Indian troops, making it extremely easy to control the country. Their control over India was solidified even more by the fact that India was not a unified country. The British made treaties with the independent states in India, which created a deeper divide in the country and ensured that India could never unite against them. The caste system only helped the Brits maintain their control.…
