Not too long ago, while browsing the internet I stumbled upon a short story that has really stuck with me. It was about a man describing the day he bought a gun and left it out on the porch and it did not kill anyone. The man was angry and thought he had the laziest gun in the world. It was barely a short story, really, it was just a few lines, yet every now and again I think myself thinking about it. I remember in the comments people referred to this story as stupid and how it did not make sense. The reason this story stuck with me is because it made a point that guns do not actually kill people, people kill people. Of course, guns do facilitate this killing but someone has got to pull the trigger.

Sixty people were killed and nearly 500 people were injured. All of this damage, was apparently done by a single man with a gun. What really is sad about this is the fact that I was not shocked by it. There was not a single bone in my body that was surprised about this massacre. The reason being that I am aware of the preposterous and nearly laughable gun laws in the United States. Yes, I am a liberal, who reads liberal news and who has seen “Bowling for Columbine”, a biased documentary on gun control laws by Michael Moore. However, I do try to be as flexible as I can in relation to politics. I really do try and look at all sides of an issue. Nonetheless I can not understand how there are people who still defend the second amendment of the US constitution that states an American’s right to bear arms. Patriotic Americans take their constitution very seriously, even though it is certainly outdated. It was written in the 1700s, over three hundred years ago, society has changed since then, should not the constitution as

Article of the Week #4 In the Article of the Week, TheWeek.com discusses the topic of “America’s Killing Cotagion” and goes into about 3 general catagories; Are more mass shootings are happening, What drives people to do these terrible things, and How we can try to stop such tragic events from happening. Some main points that were discussed were mostly just that from about 2011 to modern days, the amount of mass attacks have increased to about three times as much. Three times as much might not seem like a big deal, but imagine 20 people dying every single year just because of a shooting. This number doesn’t even include the people who were injured or deeply traumatised by this experience.…

Five years ago, Sandy Hook shook the nation. People watched the national coverage of the massacre that targeted elementary aged children, many as young as 5 years old. I thought then, that the American people would never let a child stare down the end of a barrel again. Sadly, I was gravely mistaken. Since Sandy Hook, five years ago, 7,000 more children have died from gun violence in the United States.…

Prior to the fatal shooting of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald in October of 2014, one officer requested a Taser to better diffuse the conditions. No officer near the scene had another non-lethal way to deal with the situation at hand (Give Cops). This is exact testament contributes greatly to the need for gun control laws–even in law enforcement. There are those who support gun control laws in the United States and there are those who oppose gun control laws. Gun control laws should not violate a citizen’s right to bear arms, however, these laws should exist in order to assure security for the country as a whole.…

But the case made for that "something" is almost entirely based on emotion, not reason. The hard truth is that none of the proposals that politicians and commentators have made -- about guns, mental health, broken homes, cultural failings, violence in mass media, and so on -- could have prevented this awful crime or any other similar crime yet to take place. No law can make the murderously insane sane or remove the ability to destroy innocent life from the hands of every mentally ill American. The problem, which is the actual guns that are sold to the public, is beyond these issues and from within the right to bear arms. There is a problem that clearly goes well beyond mass shootings.…

Many people blame this tragedy on the expiration of the Assault Weapon Ban of 2004. If it was still active the gunman would have not been able to buy the gun since the Ammo capacity exceeds 10, which means plenty of lives would of been saved. There has been no laws added since the shooting took place, showing how involved the government is trying to solve the problem. ( by the Numbers) If the government would have kept the Assault Rifle ban, maybe there would not have been so many cases where the criminals would not have the…

Confiscation Of The Gun Legislation In this country we are at the point of Gun control legislation, that the government is trying to save lives, but also putting the lives of citizens at risk by making it even more ridiculous on obtaining a gun legally, and in turn making the law abiding citizen turn down the route that the criminal would to obtain their guns. Sadly, our government is tirelessly still trying to construct the process and creating it more difficult and to take away that much more of safety to the legal gun toting American has by being even tougher on gun control legislation, instead of focusing on reducing the amount of guns through illegal carrying. Many options give grounds for the argument of Gun control.…

Gun Control and the Second Amendment According to Schulman (1991), the text of the Second Amendment of the US Constitutions reads as follows: “a correctly structured militia, for purposes of state security; the right of the citizens to have and to carry arms shall not be challenged.” This is a paraphrased version of what is contained in the original constitutional document. Nonetheless, it captures the spirit of the constitution regarding the issue of guns and their possession thereof.…

Guns do not kill people. People kill people. There are a lot of reasons that gun control is not the answer.
