The debate, “Does America Cherish Diversity?” has a great popularity, and has brought a great deal of unique opinions. Patel believes that America cherishes it’s diversity, and McGregor does not think America cherishes it’s diversity. Our class overall believed that America does cherish it’s diversity, but I'm writing this to tell you my opinion not theirs. My opinion on the matter is that America does not cherish it’s diversity, and they should not have to, but they should respect other’s diversity, and others should respect their diversity from them. There are many reasons I believe America does not cherish diversity.…
Another huge experience that has changed my outlook on life was going to the service project for the Isaac school district. The children attending the schools at the Isaac school district are in intense poverty. I have gone during the school days to help out in the classroom, to bring Thanksgiving dinner boxes, and to deliver a Christmas gifts to the kids. The kids on these campuses have the most amazing attitudes in the worst conditions. Some of the children go home on Friday and don't have a meal until they come back to school on Monday.…
For decades, the United States has been described as a “melting pot” of different cultures. As the population of the United States increases, factors such socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic diversity continue to grow as well. Multiculturalism can be seen in all aspects of life, including university education. With increasing minority populations at colleges across the nation, an education in diversity becomes more important. Promoting an education in diversity in university life and cultural courses not only discourages students from developing disrespectful preconceptions but also prepares them for the diverse environment of the modern workplace.…
Nonetheless, I have taken great strides to learn from these experiences and use them to make me into a better person. I also believe these experiences will shape me into a great physician. Every time I have donated my time to the homeless or disadvantaged, I am reminded of the fact that I may have only been a few bad decisions away from being in their exact position. These experiences make me feel like I am able to relate…
While in Brazil on a mission trip to volunteer in schools with Saint Vincent College, I worked closely with the children in the favelas and visited their homes to better understand how they lived. Every house contained multiple families and in a one room basement lived the most loving family who changed my life forever. The youngest child in the family was only seven years old and he had more surgeries than years on earth. During his time he had lost his legs and right arm but never his spirit or smile. I had never seen so much strength in a person and the way his mother talked about his medical care and how much it did for them as a family struck me.…
Through all of our readings and discussions from this class, we have studied many issues related to diversity. Diversity plays a major role in our culture today; however, discrimination based on race, ethnicity, class, sexuality, and gender has been apart of America’s history since the beginning. This class taught me a lot about discrimination because of diversity, and I want to focus on specifically on racial issues. In this essay, I will review several excerpts from this class concerning issues that have arisen from racial discrimination, both from America’s history and present. The first excerpt we read regarding racial issues discussed immigration to America in the late 1800’s.…
“Multi-issue” social justice organizations face a interesting challenge. During my time here at SIUE I’ve joined the campus’s GSA, a local LGBT student organization, and encountered individuals who’ve stated that in order for our organization to last, everybody must share some type of crucial characteristic, and that this characteristic should provide the symbol for the organization’s identity. This poses an interesting point given that our organization has a commitment to be welcoming to all individuals who fall within the campus’s LGBT and Queer communities. A number of students have spoken out in meetings arguing that our organization lack of something in common stems from “taking on too much” and “issues that aren’t our own”. This of course…
The world now is not what it was centuries ago. Due to countless reasons and aspects as to the evolution of our country, it has resulted in a more various society and culture. With this factor, we are able to observe specific correlations as to why the country is becoming more diverse, the governmental changes it causes, and the ever-growing societal changes. The first african american president, Barack Obama once said, “Now, as a nation, we don't promise equal outcomes, but we were founded on the idea everybody should have an equal opportunity to succeed.…
Diversity at College Campus Many people see diversity and automatically think about race, but diversity goes beyond race. Diversity in college means more than just the skin color of a person, it means change, tolerance, culture, ethnicity, and gender, among other things. Therefore, diversity shapes as an individual. This country is blessed to have a great cultural diversity. For this reason it is beneficial to consider how institutions view their diverse student populations.…
The jury in 12 angry men is quite diverse. Evidence of this diversity can be derived from the individual backgrounds of the jurors. An example is juror 5 who grew up amongst knife fights, juror 5 who grew up in the slums an juror seven ho has an affinity for baseball. This diversity helped them function as an effective team because they were able to get different points of view. An example is juror 5 explaining the dynamics of using a switch blade.…
Justice can be defined in many different ways as every person may have a different perspective of what justice truly is. Valuing diversity and challenging injustice are two key features that can help to define what justice may be. These two features can help a person to have a better understanding of what justice may be and what the good of a just society can do for it ’s people.…
Diversity means more than just having a variety of something, mostly people. It means opportunity, hope, ** ever since the dawn of time there has been prejudice, racism, skepticism and other powerfully atrocious words against different types of people, from skin color to gender identity. For a long time, the world has made people think that there are one superior race and gender in more than a few cases. Unfortunately, because of these *** it threatened the hope and possibility of diversity to those who were considered "less" of what they were or what they could be. Diversity is crucial, anywhere, it shows the world that there is no such thing as superior people who have more privilege and that anyone can do whatever they wish to achieve.…
What is diversity? Most people define diversity as being part of an underrepresented minority group such as Hispanic, African-American, Native American, etc. But diversity encompasses many other aspects such as gender, gender-identity and expression, socio-economic status and nationality. I am a first- generation American born to Nigerian immigrants. My parents came to the United States with nothing but a couple dollars and several keepsakes.…
For the private, the process of being educated is the process of enjoying learning. With the help of education, people get more than they expect, especially the sublimation of spirit. Moreover, it is a method to accumulate human capital. Human capital is a stock of knowledge, skills and creativity.
