Personal Essay: College Admission

In high school I was an A average student who was always involved in extracurricular activities. From sports to honor societies, I was an active member of most. With that being said, I believe I was a perfect candidate for the University of Maryland. The only setback that seemed apparent was my SAT score, which fell a little short of the UMD average. I was not bothered or worried about being accepted into UMD until admissions decisions came out: I didn’t get in.
My admission decision hit me hard because there was no other school I wanted to attend besides UMD. Instead of crying over spilt milk, I took initiative. This decision not only motivated me, it disciplined me to work harder than no other. Every now and then I would see my peers prospering at this university, and this only added more wood to the fire that fueled my

I dedicated many hours of my time spent at Howard Community
College to studying and trying to make myself a better student. If others are able to do it, why can’t I? Well, I can, and I will. I believe I have reached my potential to be eligible for admission to UMD.
People typically spend about two years at a community college and then transfer over.
UMD is fueled by fearless ideas, and I believe that I am demonstrating that by taking extra classes and applying to transfer after one year. I believe the work ethic I have demonstrated will be perfect for this institution. I sincerely believe HCC has shaped my life and has prepared me

I have visited all over the country, lived in every region possible, but there really is no place like home. If someone were to ask me where I wanted to attend college at this point last year, the only thing that came to mind was the word “south”. I wanted nothing more than to move to a warm place where I could explore the southern region. However, things changed and I decided to move to Connecticut. I hate to say that moving here and attending Sacred Heart University was a mistake, because it was not.…

" Ugh, what time is it?" These were the words crossing my mind as I glanced at the old clock on the wall at my job. It all started in the eighth grade, I was nearing the end of middle school and I had a daunting decision waiting for my response. The question of where I would attend high school loomed. The decision was solely mine, I was accepted to all the schools in which I applied and my parents left the choice up to me. I narrowed my list down to two, Archbishop Williams or BC High. Archbishop Williams is a small, co-ed school fairly close to home, while BC High is a much larger, all-male school located near the city and further from home.…

At the beginning of my senior year, I applied to almost ten different colleges and universities – from the east coast to the west coast and basically everything in between. I remember my reaction for each and every return letter I got. The one that stood out the most was the letter from Utah State University. Out all of the acceptance letters Utah State University was the only letter that made me jump up and down, and squeal like the excited little girl I was in that moment. My reaction was not something I could explain.…

I have participated in a number of clubs and extracurricular activities during my time attending Roman Catholic High School. I started playing rugby my freshman year in high school. We were not the best team, but we had a lot of fun and also won a few games. We did not get much better during the following years, mostly because we were not blessed with the same size and athleticism as other school’s teams in our league were. Now in my last year, I am being nominated for a captain position to help lead the younger students in games and also help them develop as a player and student for Roman Catholic.…

My heart began to beat rapidly as the familiar sound of the ringing cell phone hummed into my ear. The well-known voice of my high school guidance counselor answered, “Sue Walker, JP Knapp guidance counselor, how may I help you?” After I gathered my racing thoughts into words, I managed to respond, “Hi Mrs. Walker, this is Katelynn. I heard from another student that acceptance decisions from the North Carolina Governors School were emailed to counselors this morning.” She confirmed to me that decisions were available, but were only to be delivered in person.…

Every since I started high school, I knew I wanted to work hard and do the best that I could so I could go to a good college. The summer before sophomore year, My friend Maddie was telling me about a charter school she was joining called Success Academy. She said it was less than 20 miles away from where we live and included college courses with kids from high schools all around the area to achieve an associate's degree upon high school graduation. Being the highly neurotic teen I was, I decided not to apply with her and attend regular high school with my best friend Gabby. Eventually, seeing how much fun Maddie seemed to be having at Success Academy and how much she enjoyed it, I decided to attempt recieving admission.…

I would like to explore the STEM field at a much deeper level. I’ve learned a lot relating to science from my classes ranging in Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. However, in comparison to what can be explored and has been discovered in the universe thus far, there is much more that I can learn science in general. Participating in this program would give a better understanding on the research NASA scientists are working on today. This better understanding would include how scientists collect their data in greater detail, what they are doing right now and the future and how will this research help society now and in the near and distant future.…
