Personal Essay: Beautiful, Exotic Brazil

Improved Essays
*Oi!* I am Blair, and I come all the way from beautiful, exotic Brazil! I hope you’ve had some time to peruse my photos. I am more than happy to answer any questions you may have. Although my homeland is sometimes considered a study in contradictions (how can it be SO Catholic and yet have such a reputation for sin?!), I assure you that what you see is what you get with me. At 23, I’m old enough to have learned to speak my mind, though please forgive me if you see my fiery passionate Latina side come out a little too brashly. We have a saying in my homeland of *É o jeitinho brasileiro* which means “It’s the Brasilian way.” Trust me, there’s a lot of truth in that saying!

I use my zest for only positivity, though! I am unafraid to ask for what I want, and I love meeting men who feel the same as I. Life is too short to beat around the bush! That beat around the bush is one of my favorite American sayings! It sounds so silly, but I like what it stands for, because that’s me. No beating around the bushes! If we meet, and I hope we do, I expect you to tell me what you want. What you like. What makes your pulse race. Knowledge is power, and once I know how to pleasure, you’ll see the best of my Brazilian passion!

My long, dark hair flows nearly to my waist and my caramel skin and sultry doe-brown eyes add to the spicy Latina look. But there’s more to his curvy package as well! I came to this country to make a living with my Latin dancing skills. Salsa, mambo, merengue, rumba, tango…I do them all. Imagine my hips shaking to the pulsating beat of a mambo, mesmerizing every eye in the audience with the way the beaded fringe on my tiny skirt flickers with each movement! What?! You don’t know how to dance? Don’t worry, I can certainly teach you, alone in your room, if you’d

Loud beats, shouts and footsteps fill my ears, and an awful stench of sweat makes it’s way into my nose, but this dance studio is a special place nonetheless. It may seem hectic and rowdy to some people, but not to me. An environment I entered so cautiously at first started to become natural and safe. I had never thought I would spend so much time in this place doing something I loved. I would not forget how the first day went.…

The painting A Primeira Missa no Brasil (First Mass in Brazil) is part of the collection of the Museu Nacional de Belas Artes do Rio de Janeiro, and I had the opportunity to see this work many times during my life. The painting shows the first mass celebrated in Brazilian soil and the event was documented by the Carta de Pero Vaz de Caminha. Pero Vaz de Caminha, the clerk of Pedro Alvares Cabral, recorded his first impressions on the uncovered land in a 27 pages long document. During the 1810s and the 1820s, independence occurred in the nations of Brazil and Spanish-speaking Latin America. They were developing nations that were breaking away from the strict ruling of Spain and Portuguese. The battle towards independence was not easy for either due to the majority of those livings in most countries being in the lower class. Brazil’s independence came with little to no fight. It started with the invasion of the peninsula by Napoleon in 1808.…

For centuries, song and dance have been a vital part in creating and expressing a community’s sense of identity. Through each, members are able to pass on traditions, make political statements, and express themselves. The tango and salsa styles of music and dance are prime examples of mobilities in Latin American music that help foster a sense of identity among the smaller communities, although each required international attention before earning recognition from its home country. Each style of music is a special hybrid of all kinds of influences, demonstrating a deep history that can also give some insight to the social outlook of the times. Despite the time gap between the emergence of the two styles (tango first appearing in the early 19th century while salsa came into the scene around the 1970s), both styles have contributed a significant impact in establishing a sense of identity among Latin American music.…

Fernando Botero’s Dancing in Colombia displays warm and subtle colors throughout the painting, strong colors such as reds, browns, greens, and blacks. The strong rhythmic design in the painting would be the use of oversized people the viewer sees throughout the painting. Both male and females are shown as bulky, oversized, and grotesque. Here, it is useful to turn to Cruz’s positioning—both as a gendered and racialized subject—in the salsa industry to understand the factors which led to her recognition, and the tensions inherent in her success and visibility. Since the late 1980s and early 1990s, women have been influential to the production and development of salsa, especially as the genre struggled to enter a new era of Latin musical production in the U.S. (Aparicio 2002, 136). Artists like Celia Cruz, Yolanda la Duke, and La India gave much to the genre in terms of artistry and sound, but the overt masculine gendering of salsa made it easy for their contributions to go unrecorded. The invocation of drugs, sex, and violence in many classic salsa songs (El Malo [The Bad] or…
