My inspiration to be an art therapist came from experiencing depression. I struggled with self-harm, lack of motivation, and hopelessness. After a year of dealing with these negative emotions I couldn't help but wonder why I felt so terrible; I had also wondered what caused my aunt to commit suicide. As a result, I decided to become a psychologist, so I could study the brain, see how it controls emotion, and understand depression. After talking to my mom about how I wanted my future to look, she told me that I might be miserable because I'm an artistic person and a field that was mainly science wouldn't be something I loved. At first, I was angry with her for not believing in my goals, but after continuing art therapy, I started to consider being an art therapist myself. I realized that art therapy was a field where I could combine my love of art, my desire to understand mental illness, and my need for helping other people. Using art therapy to better myself has solidified it as my future occupation. For me, art therapy was an eye opening experience that showed me how to use art to connect with myself and that's why I want to share it.
