Personal Narrative: The Backwoods Fest

Improved Essays
The alarm that I had set the night before goes off and I debate hitting snooze and going back to bed, even though I am fully aware that I need to be out of bed and ready by 6:30 am. I am not one to rise before the crack of dawn and run miles to start out my day so I slowly drag myself out of my warm ever so comfortable bed knowing that sleeping in is not an option. This day was to be a day full of first time experiences and once I finished my morning routine, I was enthusiastic to get the day started. I will be attending the Backwoods Festival in Thornville, Ohio which is approximately an hour drive from my home. As I arrive and walk into the woods I take in my surroundings and the beauty in the nature around me overwhelms me. My entire purpose …show more content…
This is the first year for their business, Mermaid Tears, as a vendor at the festival, although my cousin and her husband had attended the festival last year. The morning starts out very slow with a very low volume of individuals exploring the pop up shops other than the other vendors walking around. I start to worry that people will not show. Around 10:30am the crowds start to slowly trickle in and I am given the opportunity to speak to potential customers to attempt to assist them with discovering pieces that they may find intriguing. All of the pieces the business has for sale are handmade, my cousin gave me the opportunity to watch her actually make a piece. I was simply amazed by the amount of work that goes into a single piece, from the stone design to the chain itself, all of this is done by hand and hard work. The amount of creativity displayed at the show was absolutely amazing. The amount of people that came into the booth and recognized the business from a previous interaction absolutely amazed me, I was so proud of Devin in that moment. At one point Devin decided that she would like to take a break and be able to explore the festival and her husband Adam would watch over the business for …show more content…
Observing the way they communicated with customers and how that lead to sales was quite interesting. Some individuals really seemed to enjoy the welcoming atmosphere and talking to us, but others completely ignored us and had no desire to have any assistance in the booth. Making sure the customers and potential future customers had a positive experience was the main priority of the day. I really enjoyed shadowing my cousin and her husband on this day. I feel like I can take a lot from this experience and apply it to my life.

Overall, my experience at the Backwoods Fest was positive one. Learning from my cousin and her husband was a truly beneficial experience. I realized how significant customer service truly is in the running of a highly successful business. I am so proud of how far my cousin and her husband have come in the last decade, despite all of the hardships they have faced head on. I am very inspired by their story and the story has taught me that I can achieve all of my major life goals as long as I work hard and keep going even if people doubt me. I look forward to hopefully assisting my cousin and her husband again at another show in the near

The Chicano Park day was eventful because of the community getting together to celebrate the culture and park. It was impressive to see the amount of people that attended the event and how diverse, especially because of the community it is located in I expected it to be particularly the neighbors. In association to the news and the elections, it is important to see the amount of support that the Mexican culture is receiving and together they can withstand anything. On my walk to the park I noticed that it was going to be crowded because of there not being any parking so we had to park down at the trolley station. This is my first time down there for this event, it was impressive because I would have never thought that due to the amount of people…

On September 15, I went and took part in el Grito ceremony held at the Miller Outdoor Theater to celebrate the Mexican Independence Day. I did not know what was el Grito, so I went to that event with an open mind. The show came after a long speech in both Spanish and English about the Mexican community in Houston and the impact of Harvey on the community. I really enjoy the sense of community that I experienced during that event. People came as a family or with a group of friends.…

A Taste of Domesticity in Stokes State Forest Throughout my four years of high school, I had never had a friend come back from a post-prom weekend in Wildwood and describe to me what sounded like a “good time.” The stories they told always had the same synopsis that centered around drunken fun and even drunker stupidity. Hordes of juniors and seniors slept in small dirty motel rooms. They spent way too much money on alcohol, and they often got swindled into paying hundreds of dollars to stay in an otherwise dirt cheap motel because no decent place would allow teenagers to party like they did. They sat in their hotel rooms and drank the beautiful New Jersey beach days away, waiting for the sun to set so they could continue their drunken…

Most teenagers would probably tell you that the beginning of their adulthood was marked by having to do laundry for the first time, or being able to drive alone, or perhaps no longer sitting at the children's table at family events. But for me, it happened this past summer, when I made the very difficult decision that I would not return to Coleman Country Day Camp. To those who were not fortunate enough to have grown up at summer camp, this might not seem like such a big decision to make. But Coleman was my outlet, my second home for ten consecutive summers and spending those two months anywhere else seemed inconceivable to me.…

Friday and Wednesday’s gallery walk was a huge learning experience. I learned so much about topics that I didn’t know anything about like Kent State, The Space Race and the Gulf of Tonkin Incident. When I was presenting I loved seeing how interested people were in my topic as was I. People had so many questions and it was great to be able to know so much and answer them. My topic was the John F. Kennedy assassination.…

“Are my brothers and dad next?” I questioned myself. July 7th, in the heart of Atlanta, Georgia, I walked for miles alongside my fellow brothers and sisters to fight for our rights of justice and freedom. Trayvon Martin and Philando Castile are just two victims of the many police brutalities that has happened in the United States. I live in a place where humans of color are still struggling to find equality.…

From my last 3 years of running cross county I have learned a lot of things. One is that you should never give up, second is that if you work hard enough then you can achieve whatever you put your mind to, and third is how you can go from disliking something to loving something. How I've learned these things from cross county is when I first started cross country, my sophomore year I couldn't run to save my life. Coach would always time us on how fast we could run two miles and I would always be last and be so far behind everyone else which was quite embarrassing but I couldn't help it I had just started and I'd never ran before in my life, at my very first meet I couldn't even run the first mile and I ended up having to drop out. After that I didn't like cross county at all because I wasn't good at it…

The event I attended was Spirit Day at Poinciana campus on October 19th from twelve to two pm. That being said, I chose this event for the reason that I felt this occasion represents the identity and community shared by all the members of our institution. Not only that, but student involvement is important when representing your school and when improving your school environment. Thus, going to such event may have a significant impact on my college experience. This type of occurrence has the effect of making students feel more united, and unity only makes us stronger as individuals, which is why attending was important.…
