Personal Essay: A Music Analysis

The famous Greek philosopher Plato once said, “Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and charm and gaiety to life and to everything.” While music has always been a large part of my life, and I have always harbored a deep respect for musicians, I do not think that I would truly have been able to appreciate this quote until I picked up a guitar for the first time. Growing up, I was surrounded by music, whether it was my brother singing in the room next to me, my mother exposing me to classic country music, or my father blasting Metallica and Led Zeppelin while driving in the car with me, there has not been a day where I have not heard an intoxicating guitar riff or mellifluous ballad. In this regard, I am truly lucky, though my admiration for music grew even stronger when I began to play it myself. The first time I picked up a guitar was January of 2013; my fingers moved ungainly over the six, metallic strings. It was my father’s guitar, though he did not know how to play, so I decided to teach myself. There was a dusty Guitar For Dummies tome that had sat on a shelf collecting years, but not ware since its acceptance to our home. To put it out of its unread misery, I picked it up and read through.

Though, I do not think that is a fair interpretation of people. Logic and expression can mix easily, and I believe that where they do is where music is created. Lyrics and language, which are ‘left-brained’ traits amalgamate with rhyming, patterns, and emotion, which are ‘right-brained’ traits, to create things that even the most straight-laced person can enjoy.
