Personal Essay: A Life Of Robert Stephens

Improved Essays
Last summer, I met a man named Robert Stephens. He is running to be a Durham City council member to make a change in his community. This is his passion, one which was instilled in him by his father, whose life motto was that if you see something wrong, you’re obligated to try and fix it. His father is dead; he succumbed to a heart attack after saving his neighbor’s children from a house fire. Mr. Stephens told us this story to show how his father was committed to his belief and to show how he was committed to his own. The passion behind his goal was infectious. I wanted to help him campaign, or work with him, or something because I was so moved by his intense belief.
This is not the first time I caught another's passion. I had caught it before in AP Environmental Science. Notoriously the easiest AP class, it was by far the most interesting class I have ever been in. My teacher, Ms. Hunter, spoke with fire about the horrors of the great pacific garbage patch, condemned the destructive practices of industrial farming, and discussed in awe the advancements of alternative energy. No teacher cared about their subject as much as she did. She even invited guest speakers and organized field trips to further our education.

I run Cross Country, and in every meet I run as hard as I can for 3.1 miles. It is horrible. Everything burns, and the fastest people are like olympians compared to the rest of us. To top it off, the minute I stop, the contents of my stomach come out my mouth. And yet I love every race. I love the weight in my legs, the ragged breath and fight for a place at the end. It is all so important to me. And now it is important to a freshman named Kyle. I have described to him the aches of a race, and how proud I feel after enduring so much agony. I hear Kyle talk about how much he hates running now, but also how much he loves it. And I am filled with pride that I could have influenced his

Also in the book The Short And Tragic Life of Robert Peace, Jeff Hobbs, the author; describes how Rob and his mother went through life in poverty. Poverty is defined as, "the state or condition of having little or no money, goods, or means of support; condition of being poor" (Dictonary.com, 2017). I always think of living pay check to pay check and having the uncertainty of not knowing if you have enough money for everything.…

Jeff Hobbs’ story The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace by Jeff Hobbs is centered on the life of a young, black man named Robert Peace who moves from an impoverished childhood in the outskirts of Newark, to the mainly white dominated Yale University, and finally, to his untimely and unsolved murder (Hobbs, 2015). Jeff Hobbs selects the topic to depict the unfortunate turn of events for the main character Robert Peace that eventually led to his death. Jeff, having been a roommate with Robert at Yale, thought that Robert’s life had been rocked with unfortunate situations from his childhood and when things seemed bright, tragedy struck time after time. The title of the story makes it clear from the onset that the story comprises of unfortunate…

Over the course of our country’s history there have been several characters that revolutionized modern day America. These characters are now only publicized in museums with little to no intellect on how important they are to our country. Although their history is taught in schools and history lectures about their success, one can think, what made these founders so special? The personality of these founders aided in their decisions on what was important to make America better. In the intensely written work Revolutionary Characters: What Made the Founders Different, Gordon S. Wood analyzes eight founding fathers such as George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, Alexander Hamilton, George Madison, John Adams, Thomas Paine and Aaron Burr.…

Earnest J. Gaines novel, a Lesson before Dying, is set in a small Cajun community in the late 1940’s, where a horrible incident occurs convicting a presumed innocent man, to death. No one quite knows how long Jefferson has, however, in the time he does have, he must learn the most important lesson of all, and that is how to be human. There are many characters in the story that learn this lesson alongside, or even because of, Jefferson, such as Grant and his girlfriend Vivian. The entire community has been effected by Jefferson’s sentence, and every character will learn a lesson while they await the dreaded end to his sentence, and watch as ‘hog’, is turned into a man. “Oswaldo was flummoxed by the fact that his friend could be so quiet, almost embarrassed, about his academic acumen, yet so damn loud and proud of his status as a premier campus drug dealer.” (Hobbs 167). Within this quote from the unforgettable story “The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace,” written by Jeff Hobbs, lies an illustration of the influence of the Hip Hop Culture subgenres that has been located throughout many life stories in the past half century told by famous singers such as Eminem, Lil Wayne, Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, 50 cent, Dr. Dre and many others. The Hip Hop Culture is described as individuals being prone to detail the struggles of life in the course of a brutally honest point of opinion. In “The Short and Tragic Life…

Hip-hop used to discuss about real life issues and problems that affect people in realistic communities. Nowadays, the focus has strayed to topics that have no actual meaning or depth to them. It is now about what sounds catchy and what promotes drugs, sex, and violence. Robert Peace in The Short and Tragic Life of Robert Peace was influenced by the pure nature of hip-hop culture as a form to connect with others in his community and stray his mind away from the troubles of life.…

Through my research I have found that Ernest Gaines and the protagonist in his novel, A Lesson Before Dying are very similar. They both live in Louisiana, are both black men who grew up on plantations post-slavery era, grew up impoverished, were raised by their aunts and both attended university. I do not believe that Gaines intent was to model Grant on his own life. Upon further research, I found that the novel was also loosely based on the non-fictional story of Willie Francis, a black man who was sentenced to death via the electric chair just like Jefferey. However, I do believe that Gaines used aspects of his own life to create Gaines and the setting of the story because he would able to tell and describe it more vividly than if he had…
