Personal Essay: A Concert Report

Everything started when my brain had triggered a sign that I was born to make music along with my companions. When one of my friends in sixth grade kept pushing me to try to join band and make music, I was hesitant. I was uncertain of my skills in playing a new instrument, so I gave up on the thought of joining band. However, as a few months passed by, my friend and her band members were performing with pride at concerts, and formal events and it made me feel envious. My older brother, Htet Nyi, and my oldest brother, Htet Ko, were both in the music classes, and I envied them for being able to make music as professionals. This made me realize the deep desire inside me to become a member of the band as well. Trying out for an instrument was nerve-wracking since I got to choose an instrument that looked cool from my perspective, and an instrument that I was interested in. I …show more content…
Thomas made us play the mouthpiece of each instrument we picked, it turned out that I created more sound on the trombone mouthpiece because my embouchure on the trombone mouthpiece produced more sound. First, I was kind of upset with the instrument I ended up with because almost all the girls played the flute, and they looked very graceful when they played the flutes. The trombone did not really satisfy the requirements I was looking for. However, when I started learning new notes on the trombone, I started loving how producing sound on the trombone was a unique element. Unlike other instruments, the trombone has telescoping slide mechanism that varies the length of the instrument to change the pitch. Playing the trombone made me look really badass, but that was not the point of playing an instrument. I really like playing the trombone after a few weeks and my trombone partner, Thon Thon, would help me with the slide positions of new notes. Due to the practice of playing the trombone at home, I soon became better than my friend in playing the trombone. Hard work had finally paid

Playing the trombone is one of my greatest skills that I developed over time in my life. I may seem effortless when I play the trombone, but it took me several challenges to get to where I am. When I was in sixth grade, a middle school band inspired me to join band in middle school. With my family being a “fresh off the boat” immigrant, however, I was insecure about myself since I was not much fluent in English. Worse than expected, my first band experience disappointed me.…

Measure 1 My lips brush against my mouth piece already attached onto the trumpet. The instrument is kind of warm since the warm up was cut short. My palms are sweaty, my lips tremble; I look at the audience, this is not Chicago, and I have no family here. I search through the audience only to see the 5 judges in the back and my band director in the front.…

The moment I decided to join the band was in elementary school when our class went to watch the middle school band play their Christmas concert. Although several of my friends had told me that classical music was dull and only useful for putting others to sleep, I loved listening to it. I would try to figure out what instruments were played and their individual part. I was glad to be able to listen to a live band without the need of speakers or headphones.…

Band has always played a huge role in my life. I remember when I joined in fourth grade. I wanted to play percussion, but fourth graders were not allowed, so I played violin (I had already played fiddle for a few years) for the rest of the year. The next year, I was super excited to be a percussionist and play the drums, and that is what I stuck with.…

During my 8th grade year, I had joined band searching for a chance of belonging. I had discovered, however, that band is more than just having a group of people to hang out with. Since I joined about two years later than most, practicing became a requirement. Every night I went home and rehearsed for hours, just so I wouldn’t fall further behind. About 500 blown-out reeds and two broken oboes later…

Over summer I was deciding whether or not to drop band and do something else for the school like speech and debate. In the end though I decided to stick with band and in doing so I have experienced many new things. So far I have not regretted doing band instead of speech and debate partially because they both do the same things like travel, give you opportunities to make new friends, and do something fun with friends. I am happy with the choice I made but if I had done speech and debate I would be doing all the same things as band but with different friends and groups of people and teachers.…

There have been many accomplishments throughout the history of the world, and many of those accomplishments have improved and helped the way people go through life. I admire these accomplishments of course, but I also have a few achievements of my own. In band, I have made the All-District Honor Band every year I have tried out, this past year I passed on to the second round of state, and I made a one, which is the highest score, on my snare solo and passed on to state. These are not all of the accomplishments I have made in band, nor are any of these the accomplishment that I am most proud of. The accomplishment I admire most is trying out for the percussion section and making the cut.…

It was held at the Redpath Hall, a building located on McTavish street. The Redpath Hall was first dedicated for a library building, but is now taken charge by the Schulich School of Music. The Hall is very charming with its high selling that contains thick dark brown carved wodden beams that covers the intire ceiling and gives warmth to the room.…

My uncle had owned two clarinets and said that he could give me one of them, so I decided to play the clarinet. The first piece I played in the band was “Can’t take my eyes off from you”, a song sang by Franky Valli. I still can recall the excitement when I first joined rehearsal. I was so impressed and got a tingle. I felt that I finally found what I can be enthusiastic about, and playing in the band became my priority.…

During my ongoing business conference to Colorado to learn about future career opportunities for my dual degrees in Communication design and Computer Science, I got to attend an orchestra concert presented by the Hapless Heroes who were conducted by Leslie Stewart. The show was musical theatre where they had a live orchestra playing in front of the stage while the actors explained the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. I attended this amazing show on the 4th of December. I love learning about Greek Mythology so I was already enthusiastic about attending this show.…
