This potentially life-saving surgery is a lengthy, complex, and invasive procedure requiring great training and expertise. Be that as it may, it was this operation that I found myself scrubbed into on my first day in the OR. Although I had been considering a career in surgery before, this experience was the pivotal moment confirming it was the only field I could see myself practicing in for the rest of my life. I was captivated by the meticulousness and grace that the surgeon exhibited while operating on the patient. Although the case lasted 6+ hours, time passed as if only an hour or two …show more content…

In looking for a program, I seek one that will expand my medical knowledge and, through superior surgical training, make me a competent surgeon able to serve a wide range of patients. It is also important to me that this program has available, well-versed attendings that are willing to teach. Moreover, I hope to work with a team of residents with compatible personalities who support one another invariably. Ten years from now, I aspire to be an accomplished surgeon who has successfully completed this training program. As a well-respected member of my medical community, I hope to proficiently use the skills learned in residency to change the lives of my patients on a daily basis. Considering this, and all the reasons given above, I can confidently say there is no field other than surgery in which I can envision myself

Some say the Civil War furthered medical intelligence, others say it prevented people from further study of the medical field. Surgeries back then were brutal and sometimes, unnecessary. Amputations, for example, existed among the army because bullets were stuck in the bones of the soldiers. Medics could not save two-thirds of wounded soldiers because they knew nothing about bacteria and the importance of sanitation. They dressed wounds with the same bandages on different people because the medics thought it would save supplies of bandages (Wegner).…

Like most young girls, I dreamt of being a veterinarian when I grew up. Of course, at first, little girls simply wish to be surrounded by "cute" animals, not understanding completely what the true position demanded. However as I grew older, while most girls my age had abandoned their childhood fantasy, the thought of being able to aid an innocent creature, unable to help itself continued to enthrall me. In school I studied biology and discovered a unique love for the subject, one in which I had never experienced with any other academic area before. Growing older still, I regarded the world around me and realized how great of a demand there was for all practices of doctors and scientists.…
