Personal Conundrum In To Kill A Mockingbird

Improved Essays
Atticus Finch in To Kill A Mockingbird states “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb into his skin and walk around in it.” I feel, personally, that this quote addresses the problem of the world, not just my own personal conundrum. However, I am not going to discuss the world, but rather myself. I find that many times I am to quick to judge, quick on the trigger if you will. I see certain people everyday and immediately think to myself, “Wow, they must be criminals” or “He/she must be a drug addict.” These are just some of my own personal thoughts. However, I know that these immediate beliefs and judgments are not acceptable. I know I am not the only person that does this sort of thing, but I also know that prejudice can quickly ruin any possible relationships that can be established. Steve Jobs once said, “Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life...have the courage to follow your heart and intuition.” By this he means don't let the voices and beliefs of others overrule yours, but instead follow your own intuition. All things considered, today was, to abridge, tiring. What's more, miserable. I stay here, writing in this diary at the foot of Jem's bed, viewing over him as he dozes, his rest gradually helping his arm to recuperate, now that Dr. Reynolds has gauzed it. Thinking back judiciously and sensibly, I feel no lament for my activities - in helping Tom Robinson, or in the way I've brought up my youngsters - I just feel an unfolding compassion and disillusionment for the man who had, looking in context, began this entire emergency.…

I’m not really sure where my particular prejudice came from. Most people tell me I’m really good with kids and so is the rest of my family. I haven’t had any bad experiences with male babysitters so that didn’t really effect how I felt. Most prejudices I think though come from your family and the other people you surround yourself with. I believe this is the main area that they originate from because these are the people you spend the majority of your time.…

We will never be able to measure the full effects of prejudice: personally I think it affects everyone, even if it occurs at a dorment level. I will be the first to admit that I am prejudice: I judge people daily by how they dress, talk, and look (that isnt in a bad way). Prejudice has a heavy impact on the ones to who it is directed at; it shows the ignorance of the person displaying the prejudice.
