Reflective Essay On Political Perspective

After reading the chapter and reflecting, I greatly feel that my political perspective is that of a conservative. I feel that this perspective has been heavily influenced by my parents and their beliefs as those are the ones that they’ve instilled in me. I would like to say that this won’t change with time but even now I’ve become curious about others and their way of thinking.

As I was reflecting on both the reading and the lecture, I discovered that a great deal of my political perspective lines up with that of a conservative. I feel that the reason for this is that growing up my parents, both immigrants, pushed for us to live the American dream in all its glory. They were always so focused on us fitting in and following all the rules. We went to church every Sunday, respected our elders, and were expected to excel in all things. From a very young age we learned that God and hard work could get us anywhere. Now as an adult it has led me to feel the same way as my parents and to never really question it. As indicated in the readings and lecture, as a conservative, I am not very open to change. I think that in many ways, personally for me, it mostly is due to some intense things in my past, the sense of losing control, and the not knowing of who will direct this change. The encounter with different audiences demands us to be flexible and to consider each point of the spectrum. I feel that no matter what our personal views we should always separate ourselves as a person and always serve as a social worker and our intention should always be for the benefit of our client. That does not mean to lose ourselves or our identity, but rather to wear it like a coat we can take on and off to better serve and not hinder ourselves when serving the
