Personal Connection: Diversity In Elementary Schools

Personal Connection
Hi Mackenzie! I was also especially excited about the topic of diversity. My Diversity in Schools class, last semester was amazing. I know in my heart and mind that it left me a changed person. I empathize with your former concern of, how will I actually be able to bridge the gap, and connect with my students wherever they are on the cultural / ethnic spectrum. I have lived in Idaho my whole life and I know that today, our population is so much more diverse than it has ever been. I see it in the elementary schools, I see it in the mall and at the park. In my mind I can’t help but think, wow! I always knew that Boise was a cool place, it is so great that other people can join our city and bring some variety of culture too.

In this article Rahilly (2015) discusses the process in which a parent must learn and accept the new identity taken upon by their child. Her approach is taken in three forms: gender literacy, gender hedging and ‘playing along’. She conducts her research through a method that contains the answers from parents who mainly identify as heterosexual. Amongst these findings the participants are children under the age of nineteen and are either gender-variant or transgender. In terms of demographics, “the participants are largely white, middle class, and well educated” (p. 344).…

Due to policies such as the zero-tolerance policy, minorities feel as though they have been pushed out of the education system, rather than being labeled as a drop out. The young men interviewed in this article entered the correctional system before the age of eighteen, they never received a high school diploma, and they were labeled as felons upon their release. As a result of the failing educational system that pushed them out and lead them to imprisonment, these individuals made a living through illegal means. The motive for why youth became involved in drug trafficking is best explained by Mohamed and Fritsvald’s dorm room dealers’ example.…

Born and raised of West Indian Heritage, students made my life a living hell because I spoke with an accent. “Where are you from?” instantly began the conversation.…

Diversity affects the classroom by race, gender, religion, and sexual orientation. It is important to promote difference because it can benefit others. Each individual student has a different background and should be able to feel comfortable in and out of the classroom. My goal as a future teacher is not only to come up with different strategies to encourage equality but create a safe-zone for my students. All students deserve a great education and the best way to help them achieve it is for them to embrace their own and others uniqueness.…

Growing up in a diverse community of Hispanics and Anglos I became aware of the differences in culture, race, and religions early. Although I enjoy diversity I also became aware of the challenges some populations face daily and noticed early on that these populations are underserved not just by the lack of financial resources and opportunity, but also by laws. My experiences living in Baker helped foment my interests in pursuing a career in the field of law and social work for the overall betterment of my community. During my first six years of childhood, my mother was a single mother left with the financial responsibility of supporting two young children on her own.…

Generally, if someone is different than us we do not take the time to take a closer look at that person to get to know him or her. We can become afraid of others and thus do not become unified as a community of learners. This can happen with those who look different, act different, or are differently abled. Taking the time to get to know about each student and their cultural background, even if it is only a little different from a peer’s own culture, will help a teacher and other students learn about the unknown and also identify with other students through likenesses and differences. This includes learning about each student’s family and learning about places that live differently from us.…

It was fun to learn more about the different stages in life and what can be done to help prevent things. One thing that stuck out to me the most was the adverse childhood experiences (ACES), and how these things that may seem so simple, can affect someone for the rest of their life. I enjoy being able to relate people to theories. This is not always a good thing, because theories are not always accurate, but I like to see and compare how fitting they are for that person. I am registered in a class called Diverse Populations, and I am very excited about this.…

Diversity and inclusion in education is an ongoing issue that, as teachers, we will need to be constantly aware of. To be aware of the diverse students in the classroom, whether that be their various cultural and religious beliefs or simply their learning styles as well as being welcoming and accepting of these differences and adapting teaching methods to ensure their success in school means that we are, hopefully, getting the most potential out of the students we are teaching. There is a correlation between diversity in an educational context and Human Rights and Social Justice in the wider world. Simply, diversity relates to Human Rights and Social Justice in education because as the Australian Human Rights Commission states Human Rights…

During my junior year of high school, my AP United States history teacher showed us a video about 4 Chinese students that had to take a college placement test. This video was enlightening because I had just received my ACT scores back and I had done better than I had expected to do. I did not think about this video again until February of my senior year when I had a Chinese exchange student come and stay with me. Her American name was Tiffany and she was a sophomore at Jian Ping High School, an elite school in the city of Shanghai in the People’s Republic of China. Tiffany taught me a lot about diversity, Katherine W. Phillips said, “Even simply being exposed to diversity can change the way you think.”…
